My aunt homesteaded in alaska in the 80's and lived there until just a few years ago. She has killed a pile of grizzlies off their place with a 45-70. Her old 45-70 is her favorite gun, she is one tough gal. It has been my experience that most people in alaska carry a 45-70 or a 12 gauge pump for bears. The 45-70 is legit, I have always wanted one, I am currently lusting over a Winchester 1885.
