Just got back from the BH deer hunt. Toughest hunt I've been on in some time. Did a ton of walking, waiting, rattling, calling. Did not see a ton of deer. Eventually found a deer with horns that I could get in my scope (4x3). Saw a lot of tree damage from spring storms I guess. Hunting an area with active logging which changes the dynamic a bit too. Experienced snow, rain, sleet, heat and the cold. Found a fresh set of Lion tracks with a kitten tag along. Saw a wolf which is a first for me in the hills. Dang thing was walking down a road. When i drove up to it, it ran up the embankement 30 yds and stood broadside, I had the window down and asked it if it needed a hug. It did not seem very concerned. I think if i had held out a piece of meat, it might have taken it. I was leaving when it dawned on me to take out the cell phone and snap a pic. Nope, as I backed up, it high tailed. Cannot remember where it was at. Somewhere between Angustora and Spearfish I think. The deer are finally getting excited about breeding. Next time, I will go at for the middle of the month instead of the beginning. Hope everyone is having a good season so far.

I didn't realize there were wolves in the Black Hills. First I have heard of it I guess. Has anyone else seen them or can you confirm they are there?

Was wondering how the Hills have been lately - I have some points I've been saving and have been debating on when to cash them in. Sounds like I'll wait a bit...

There a lot of area to the Hills, I just might not have been in the correct locale or time period. YouTube has vids of SD wolves. Wyoming needs to do a better job of controlling them. JK

Saw a trail cam confirming it this fall. I don't think gfp has said anything yet tho

Got checked out by a regional supervisor GFP east river rifle. Had a nice talk with him. He told me a story of when he started with the department, they gave him a camera and told him to go see what he could take pictures of. He was close to Custer State Park and when he stopped for traffic and happened to look to the side of the road, a wolf emerged from trees headed towards the road. He got several pictures and had the biologist support his assumption of it being a wolf. This was many years back so they know. We just had a bull elk killed on I-29 on the Moody county line recently. One never knows what they might see in the woods. Enjoy every day.
