Allow me a moment to be ecstatic before you direct your ire.... ok, go for it.
I actually managed to draw an Elk tag in Gila on my first try this year. My assumption is applying for a less desirable tag (if there is such a thing in Gila), helped. This is for second rifle season in 16B, with slightly higher odds. Maps are on order and JR has already offered his help, assuming he doesn't draw his own exciting tag. Scouting starts in earnest following a trip to Montana.
I couldn't be more excited for this trip. Not only is it my first Elk hunt in earnest, but Gila was the first place I dreamt about hunting. Add onto that the fact JR and a non-hunting buddy are offering to tag along and I think this has the makings of one hell of an adventure.
That said, any and all advice is welcome! This is the first time any of us will be hunting New Mexico.
