Does anyone have any ideas on coues hunting 36A next week? A friend reached out to me this week asking for some help. He's a new hunter, with very limited big game experience, he has more waterfowl experience. The reason he has the tag is because his fiance's best friends husband told him they should put in, and he would take him hunting there....well now there's no more fiance, and due to keeping the peace at home former fiances best friends husband can no longer take him hunting and has pretty much cut off communication so he can't even get some of the basics.

[insert classic line] I'm not looking for anyone's honey hole [/insert classic line]

He's just looking for some 60,000ft level thoughts, even non-hunting ideas like last stops for gas, where to eat etc. I've had him try and reach out to the biologist, but figured I'd reach out here in case anyone had any ideas.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you care to share any ideas.

I've hunted 36B and 36 A for quail. We saw lots of Mule Deer in every draw and we saw Coues deer at the heads of the drainages, but did not take a lot of time to glass. You will probably get checked by Border Patrol because you will set remote sensors off. They are in the territory every day and can be a valuable resource. Several that we talked to gave us good intel on where to start looking.

From the AZDGF Website:

White-tailed Deer

Overview: Whitetail hunting throughout the unit is good. Habitat conditions during 2006-07 allowed fawn survival to remain stable.Whitetail are found in good numbers throughout the Huachuca Mountains., Canelo Hills and Mustang Mountains.. Trophy quality bucks are still available, but hunters must be persistent and patient if they expect to harvest one of these elusive animals.

Area: Take I-10 to Highway 90, south to Sierra Vista allowing access to the east side of the Huachuca’s’. I-10 to Highway 83 to Sonoita, east on Hwy 82 to Mustang Mountains. or south on Hwy 83 to Canelo Hills and west side of Huachuca Mountains.

Access can be obtained by purchasing USFS maps. Additionally, state land and topographical maps are helpful. As with all hunting, scouting is important to a successful hunt. With whitetail hunting, scouting is a prerequisite if one wants to put the percentages in his favor. If a mature buck is your goal, any hunt can produce a trophy but knowing the area and the habits of your buck are paramount to success.

I just came back from hunting unit 35B and it was not easy. Check out the AZDGF website for more info. Good luck.

36A look around the Sierra Anca Mountains south and west of Saurita
.. toward the south end. Pay particular attention to any draws that go up high toward a saddle.
