Butte County Commissioner John Traughber has scheduled an ATV Ride
June 26, 9:00 AM gather - 10:00 AM ride
Arco, ID - meet at the Submarine Monument
across Hwy 20 from Pickle's Place
Ride in the vicinity of Arco Pass and over to Howe..

Participants will be given maps of rides of varying lengths, destinations, and loops. Choose your own ride!! Riding is primarily on dirt roads and primitive 4WD trails, all open to the public now. A map will show you which are fun, get somewhere, and make loops.

Butte County is scheduling the event to promote ATV tourism and the potential for ride variety in the vicinity of the proposed Arco-Challis ATV trail. Participants are encouraged to stop in local businesses and let proprietors know they're there to ride.

Dirt bikes also welcome! Gather up your friends and come! Pass this on to all the ATVers you know! We need a good crowd to demonstrate the potential success of the proposed trail.!

Some of you may know that a part of the trail has been stalled by the reluctance of the Custer County Highway District to approve it - and also the red tape involved with allowing unlicensed vehicles on US Hwy 93, which they will need to do to cross the Salmon River bridge to get into Challis.

Commissioner Traughber does not intend this to stop local communities like Arco from promoting sections of the trail, and the trails that loop off from it, in their own community. He noted that very few will ride all the way from Arco to Challis, beginning to end, but will use the local communities as jumping off points to visit sections. This event will promote the trail and riding from those communities.

If you need further information, or maybe camping information in the vicinity, contact:

That would be a good ride.
We have spend alot of time in the area between Howe & Challis ,there are some GREAT riding places and lot's of animal's to see.
Moose,Elk,Bear ,Deer (white tail & muledeer).

Easy Deb, we all know (from listening to BUZZ, EG, & IT) that you can't see any criters fro the seat of your ATV. According to the three (not so) wise men, all critters run at least a mile or more away from any road or trail used by ATV's.

"Participants are encouraged to stop in local businesses and let proprietors know they're there to ride"......and then order a bacon double cheeseburger , large fries and a chocolate shake to fuel the vigorous workout they're getting on their machines !

Ten beers , You should suggest a weigh-in before the ride with trophies awarded to the riders who gain the most weight on this strenuous and challenging activity .

Don't forget to ice down those thumbs after such a difficult workout .
Machines conquering Mountains ... just makes me swell up with pride for my fellow outdoorsmen !

Farichaseben,it's not nice to make fun of MOOSIE's eating habit's LOL

"and then order a bacon double cheeseburger , large fries and a chocolate shake "
You forgot the Coke chaser!!!!!!!!!!

"Don't forget to ice down those thumbs after such a difficult workout "

Hell I find that if I just duct tape the thumb throttle down the only thing I have to ice when done riding is my butt cheek's from holding on.
Most of the time I find a creek (a big ass creek) to hang my cheeks over ,that way I can still hold on to a beer while Im iceing up the sore spot's.

Elkgunner,I believe thats a legal trail system that ATV is on,isn't it?
I see no difference between riding on a legal trail and haveing someone bitch about it then I do when some non-hunter bitches about seeing me in the field with a firearm during a legal hunting season's.

There is no difference between riding on an open trail system then driving on any open road system. EG, are you proposing we boycott the interstate system? :D

Uhhh... Ten Beers... Did you skip Summer School today??? How do you ever think you will get out of the third grade, if you don't attend???

I am pretty sure I didn't propose we boycott the interstate system, but I do think it is absolutely ridiculous for " allowing unlicensed vehicles on US Hwy 93".

I think the Fat-Assed crowd would be better if they had to get off their machines, and push them across the bridge....

Every legal ATV in Idaho is a registered motor vehicle. I don't understand your concern. This case in point would be no different then allowing snowmobiles to ride across state highways. EG, are you proposing that snowmobile riders should now be required to push their machines across highways???? Your BSU education is really starting to show it's limitations. :D

Well TenBeers, if you get one of the 4th graders to read the Original posting YOU posted, you will see the Butte County Commissioner is setting up a Ride for the "unlicensed" ones.

Yeppers, the Fat-Assed crowd ALWAYS follows the law...

Scuse my ignorance; but, why do we need roads and trails for all terrain vehicles?? ...hmmmmmm???

pawclaws ,
Because "vehicles" don't belong on "all terrain".
Vehicles belong on roads .
Sadly there is a growing population of FAT , LAZY SLOB hunters who pull their carcasses off the couch once a year to go "hunting" and they ride their machines anywhere they can get them . They need roads and edjemacation to keep from being shot .

Butte County sells it's soul for a few bucks...

"Butte County sells it's soul for a few bucks..."

Oak,could it be that they are doing just as they have been told to do
Trying a new approach to bring money into there area ?
The changing time's means changing the way we look at these small town's ,isn't that what we have been told?
People in these small town's should move foward stop being afread of change.

How many time have we seen poster's talk about the old way is over get used to it,logging, ranching, minning has come to an end!!
If these people want to survive they need to look towards recreation based service's .

It looks like they are taking that advice and looking at a new way to bring in business to there town's (The new wave of recreation.)

Why do you suppose those uses are decreasing? I'd say because the general public sees more value in recreational uses because those uses leave the land intact. The ATV crowd has a pretty poor track record when it comes to using the land without damaging resources. Even if it's true that a relatively small percentage of ATV users are the ones tearing the hell out of everything they can, what does it mean when you go from 200 users in an area to 2,000, or 20,000? That 10% jackass crowd just went from 20 to 2,000. What will the effects of that kind of use be? I sure wouldn't want that kind of use in my backyard.

I'd say it has more to do with people wanting to look PC and allowing the bunnyhuggers to influnce them.

So Oak , are you saying that Recreational use on public land should come to the point of being hike in only ?

I think we need good area's so people can choice there own type of recreation?
With all the ATV's ,RV's,Mt Bike's,Boat's and Snowmachine's that are being sold today I would bet we will be seeing more trail system's like this going in.

I dont think so, read the news...

All the Federal and State land agencies are shutting more areas down to motorized use than they are opening up.

I wouldnt make a big investment in anything other than hiking boots...

Buzz ,I got my hiking boot's and pack frame.
But from the looks
of the parking lot at my local ATV /motorcycle/snowmachine dealer I havent seen the decline.
While I understand there are area's being closed off I still don't see a total ban anywhere in the near future as long as the trend's stay the same.
With help from the dealer's ,club's and Blueribbon coalition I think we will be seeing more desagnated trail system's and inforcment being put in place.
With the closure in alot of the unit's in Idaho during hunting season and the shift to opening up these trail system's for the general public I see it as a good thing for the public as a whole.
Im happy to have some of the off limit's area's in place of a trail system that can be managed better.

MD4ME,

I'm just looking at the issue realistically. The land agencies are beyond the "recognition" part of the ATV problem. They're now taking action to limit them, more closures on the way, bet on it.

I can see where things are headed and I wouldnt waste my money on something that will most likely be sitting in the garage collecting dust more and more as time goes on.

Plus, with the way ATV's are selling, you can expect the areas that allow ATV access to become more and more crowded all the time. Which is the EXACT opposite reason of why I want to spend time in the woods. If I wanted to be around a crowd, I'd head to the mall...allright the mall in Ft. Collins, I realize I live in Laramie. ;)
