Any Crossfitters on here?

I've incorporated some of the ideas and exercises into my workout. Same with the Pilates stuff. I wanted to get more flexibility and endurance without having to focus solely on them. I still like to lift in the traditional sense; but have made a concious effort to do some low weight high rep stuff and to take very little time inbetween sets.
 
The first rule about cross-fit -

Tell everyone else that you are doing cross-fit.

I'll be honest, I am not a huge fan of crossfit. I do like parts of it. I like that they focus on many bodyweight and compound movements which really strengthens your core and are beneficial for our hobby. You'll notice a big difference after doing it for a few months and then packing out your next critter.

I do like that it is competitive and high tempo sometimes so it can help get you motivated. The tempo can also be a big downfall though. Speed and compound movements don't go together, it's not safe. When you try to do something faster, you tend to cheat it. Cheat on deadlifts or cleans and that could easily be a season ender.

I much prefer a regular gym where you can isolate and work on the things you need to work on to reach your goals. I have been really sick the last 2 weeks but before that I had a great regimen going for 3-4 months. Lifting M-S and then cardio 2-3 days a week. I much prefer to set that treadmill on as the steepest setting and just start walking or load up your frame pack and hit the stairmaster. You can't get much more applicable to our sport than that. Nothing will increase your testosterone like deadlifts, squats and bench press.

Plus, a traditional gym is much cheaper and it's not such a cult. I'm paying $10 a month at Gold's in Boise, no contract no start up fee. Can't beat that.
 
I drank the cool-aid for a while. Still I started to encounter injuries.

Blew a calf muscle, torn labrum.

It's a fun sport, but I personally believe it's a younger person's sport. If you participate above 40 years of age be ready to spend some time at the doctor's office, in PT, under the knife....or all of the above. :eek:

Its not a sport....its exercise. Not training, or sport. Its exercise. A random conglomeration of activities (Olympic lifts, plyometrics, calisthenics, body weight lifts, and high intensity cardio) thrown together for random workouts......no progression, no periodization, etc...

I have been doing crossfit for the last 15 months and I have got to say I love it. Lost 30lbs and I am in great shape. Love how everyone says its bad for you, find a gym that has good trainers who teach the proper technique and you are good to go. It is only as hard as you make it. Listen to your body and don't push yourself to injury no good coach will push you so hard you get hurt.

Just my 2 cents. And I love being the best at exercising;!;)
 
And your neurologist and orthopedic specialist will love you back....all the way to the bank. LOL.

Considering I played college football and I know how to lift with proper form the ortho will never see me.;) the way I look at it is if it gets someone off the couch and exercising who cares what they are doing.

Yep and yep. Intensity (speed or weight) only comes after proper mechanics and consistency of proper mechanics.

'Course no one ever gets injured doing something as simple as jogging... ;)
 
I've been doing crossfit for about 16 months and am in far superior condition than when I started. I'm closer to 40 than 30 and am far from the oldest in my gym. Having people push me further than I would push myself and having good coaching on proper technique make it safer than non-crossfitters think. The coaches want everyone to be successful so they generally make sure that we scale the workouts to our ability levels so we are both safe and improve.

The atmosphere is fun and most of us have jobs, kids and other interests outside of exercise. I've been to several different boxes in my travels and found most of them to be very similar in regards to the community and positive attitudes.
There's a vet with 1 arm that works out with us so if he can do it I figure I've got no excuse. Overall I think it's a really good way to build general fitness.
