I couldn't remember which thread Nemont and Buzz were discussing the relative merits of ranchers preferring Crown Royal or Black Velvet.....
Program helps ranchers protect stock
Associated Press
A federal program that has provided financial assistance to Montana producers affected by drought is now helping ranchers protect their livestock from predators such as bears and wolves.
The program, administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, will provide funding to ranchers interested in building fences or putting in place certain other "predator deterrent" measures. This is the first time in Montana that money through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program will go toward funding such practices, according to Carrie Mosley, the program manager for the agency in Bozeman.
"Predators, especially wolves now, are a huge issue, and we were trying to brainstorm ideas on how to help agricultural producers deal with some of those issues," Mosley said Monday.
EQIP has $22 million for a variety of projects, she said, including development of livestock ponds and improvements to irrigation systems - efforts that gained notice in recent drought years.
Ranchers can get financial help to dispose of carcasses at approved landfills or rendering companies; install "predator deterring" fence in areas of cattle concentration or bee apiaries; or hire a herder.
