I'm nervous to post this but I'm going for it anyway. I'm 63 yrs old and burned 8 pts to draw 1st rifle bull in unit 76 this year. I'm in good shape for my age but this could be my lifetime hunt for a nice bull on public lands with the point creep. I've never been in the unit but plan at least 2 scouting/backpacking trips in Aug to get the lay of the land. I've read everything I can find on the internet about the unit and have topo maps and google earth to "see" it before scouting. My grown son is flying in for the hunt to help, especially with the packout. We're proud to do it the old fashioned way, don't own atv's or trail cams. I just drive my old ford truck as close as I can, then get out and start walking and pack everything out on our backs. We're not afraid of hard work and packed out my son's elk in the attached pic last year.
With that said, I'm looking for recent advice on general areas to avoid or look into while scouting and hunting in unit 76. By general advice, it could be NW or south central or comments on the wilderness, good or bad. It's such a huge area and I'd just like to narrow down the places I backpack thru in August while scouting. I'd love to PM anyone with first hand knowledge that's willing to share a little of it. Thanks in advance and good luck to all this year.
