Trail leads officials to poached deer

Associated Press — Jan. 7, 2003

FLINTSTONE, Pa. — A trail through a wooded area led game officials to a garage that contained 20 poached deer, and five men have been charged with various hunting violations, authorities said.

After finding two untagged deer on a mountain in Southampton Township in Bedford County, game officials said they followed an all-terrain vehicle trail about two miles to a garage near the Maryland border.

Inside were the carcasses of 27 deer, only seven of which were taken lawfully, officials said.

The five men have been charged with counts ranging from killing deer without a license to possession of road kill without a permit, game officials said recently.

Jody L. Kifer, 22, of Clearville, Bedford County, was charged with eight counts of killing antlerless deer without a license. Two other Bedford County men were also charged with killing deer and possessing road kill.

A man from Virginia and one from Maryland also face poaching-related charges. Kifer has an unlisted phone number and could not be reached for comment.

If that were in Arizona, the AZGF would own at least a garage. Probably a house and lot and maybe even a new dining room set...
