Just watched the documentary of Dick Proenneke again. That guy is the definition of OYOA! That show gets me fired up every time I see it, can't wait for fall.

Dick was an amazing person. I work with a number of people who were close personal friends with Dick and shared many adventures with him - I never get tired hearing their stories of him. I've also had the privilege of volunteering to oversee Dick's cabin for the park, definitely a couple weeks well spent in the wilderness.

My in-laws got me the videos so I promptly put them in storage. When I finally got desparate enough to watch it, I watched it twice, both videos!! I have 8 acres in Alaska and I like to imagine myself in Dick's boots. Incredible man with outstanding drive and skill set.

It runs on PBS here, twice a year. I never miss it, even though I have seen it many times.

to read Dick's own words....

Sam Keith's One Man's Wilderness is a great read. If you want to read Dick's own journals, those are available as well. John Branson, park historian and Dick's good friend, edited two books that are a compilation of Dick Proenneke's journals. Just do a Google search of "More Readings from One Man's Wilderness: the Journals of Richard L. Proenneke."

Bob Swerer took our wedding pictures. He told me about Dick, and the work he did with him. I watch his story on PBS as well. Never gets old. He was amazing! (and he was an Iowa kid to boot :)
