heading out this morning for the Steens.

Steens were tough. 18.3 miles first day and not single deer. 7.4 miles second day. Lots of elk, no deer, from river to top of Aspens and 2 gorges. 4th day ended up with a small 4 point. It was only the second deer in all the camp grounds. I am sure in next few days with weather coming it may turn up a few more. Good luck to everyone.

Congrats, I remember when the Steens were full of deer and sheep and the elk had just started to populate the southwest canyons. From your recap, times have changed!

Yes and they keep adding more tags with no antler point restrictions. I cashed in all my points just to hunt. Always wanted to as a kid as I always enjoyed reading all the stories and seeing monster buck pictures.. At one time it was one of the better Mule deer units in the country. I knew it had changed but wanted to see it at least one time before I couldn't.
