Hi guys,
Is there any decernable difference between these two rounds?
If my goal is to push a 120 gr bullet at 2800-2900 fps and a 139gr bullet at 2700-2800 fps out a 20" barrel , would it make a difference which round I used?

If you are loading your own ammunition, the 7mm Mauser round is just marginally faster. If you are depending on factory ammo, then the 7mm-08 is a better deal. Either one should be capable of the goal you set. The 7mm08, because of the smaller powder capacity will perform better in a short barrel. Optimally, 22 inches. You'll be OK with either one though...

Hi Guys,
I just got back from talking to the gunsmith who will be helping me build the scout rifle. He'll look for a Rem action but if nothing shows up between now and the time I return from my deployment, we'll build up a mauser. If we go remmington it will be a 7-08 if not we will use a 7x57.

Thanks everyone for your inputs

NWC,

I have a 20" 7-08. I am shootting 140 gr barnse xlc's w/ 51.5 grs H380, mag primer, sub inch 3 shot group and getting over 2900 fps. I like the 7-08!

I've had nothing but good luck with my 7-08, its a Remington Mountain Rifle. When I do my part and don't buck fever too much they seem to go down as if struck by lightning. Thsi years deer I used a 150gr. prototype of a bullet that should be out next fall, I was very, very impressed. I've killed deer and elk with 130 grain spitzers, 150 gr protos., and 175 grain speer grand slams. All have performed really well for me.

Long live the 7X57!! It was my 1st rifle, many yrs ago.

If your handloading, and if your using a tube longer than the 20" you specified, AND your looking at pushing out some heavier bullets, then I'd say go for the 7X57.

My new toy is a Ruger 7mm/08. 150 Nosler BT's stoked to around 2750 fps (22" barrel). It's doing just fine....................

Have fun deciding!

this is what my 7-08 will do

and thats a 4 shot group the recipe is on the target

dude thats my kids gun and i was shooting it at 100 yards. i wish i had something with a full size stock that would shoot that good

Thats a great group. My little 260 absolutly loves H414 too. Actually I think I'm shooting the same charge with a 120gr Ballistic tip, and Sierra's...
