I'm looking for a pack. I like the MR Metcalf a lot but it is bigger than I really need. Something like 60 liters or about 3500 ci would be about right, with the overload system for packing my elk out (in one trip, of course). 0
I would like something that is of medium size for everyday hunting, capable of a reasonably big, but not monstrous loads. The Pintler looks too small and I really dislike that zipper system. Athough I have never actually used it, I don't trust it.

We got my Dad a MR Selway pack and its a versatile pack!

I've looked at that a little. It is the right size, but it has the zippers of the Pintler and I don't like'em. I don't trust 'em. I am be wrong. A few external pockets would be nice.

I also don't find that model on the current MR website for some reason. At least not under hunting backpacks. Perhaps it is discontinued.

But it is the right size.

I was looking for something fitting your requirements a couple of years ago. I wanted something highly capable of packing out at the end of the day, but less obtrusive for carrying around on your average day hunt ( My previous pack was a Badlands 4500 and weighed around 8 pounds empty ) and also usable for other backpacking.

I went with the Seek Outside Peregrine. Not sure of your budget, as this is an expensive pack due to bag flexibility, high weight capacity and being fairly light weight ( under 4 pounds empty ).

I am very happy with it so far. Can carry more than you can. No problem at all with fitting tripod, spotter and supplies for multiple days. Has the breakaway system so you can carry between the frame and bag, or swap in a different bag, or even just use a panel for ultralight meat packing.

Take a look at the Stone Glacier Solo. It’s been a solid pack for the last several years.

Thanks for these suggestions. They are exactly what I was wanting to hear about. The Peregrine in particular, has my attention. Definitely interesting.

How durable is the pack bag on the Peregrine and the Solo?

+1 On the kuiu icon pros. Super lightweight and fully capable of 100# plus payloads. The inside load sling takes a bit of experimenting until you understand how to properly put a full elk quarter in there but it does it job by keeping it tight and high on your back.

After a bit of reading and websurfing I decided the Seek Outside might be as good as it looked. I fell hook, line, and sinker for those side pockets coupled with the ability to sandwich a meat bag between pack bag and frame. It's 4-6 weeks out, but it's coming. This will be more than 3 lbs lighter than my old Gregory and a whole bunch less cumbersome and more functional. Thanks one and all.
