U.S. Delta 2 Rocket Launches 50th GPS Satellite
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - The 50th U.S. Global Positioning Satellite lifted off aboard a Boeing Delta 2 rocket on Saturday.
The $45 million satellite, with the words "Lighthouse in the Sky" painted on its side, was built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems for the U.S. Air Force Space Command.
The Space Command runs the constellation of GPS satellites used by every branch of the U.S. armed forces as well as motorists, campers, sailors and amateur astronomers around the world to fix their exact positions on the globe.
Delta officials reported 14 minutes after liftoff that the satellite was in its initial orbit.
The satellite will replace an 11-year-old GPS satellite nearing the end of its useful life.
