I've been loading IMR 7828 behind 200 gr. XLCs. 71 gr. is compressed and accuracy wasn't great--velocity was fairly consistent--around 2790. Drop ping down to 70.6 grains gave 2710 with improved accuracy. Friends have said H 414 is a good powder choice??
I think Chuck Hawks is right when he says the case is best suited for .27 to
.31 caliber --as it was specifically designed for the 300 WSM.
I have not started handloading for it as of yet. But factory winchesters read around 2925 with the 200gr accubond out of my browning, and average 2775fps through the chrono with the 220gr power point. Not planning to reload for it this year till I put together some more brass. Will see how the 220gr power point performs on elk this fall.
ALso, any idea what the factory is using as a powder? Are they using a blend, because it seems the ballistics listed from the factory and those I have achieved with factory loads through my chrono are fairly close together. But what I see listed for what can be obtained with handloads is significantly slower. You guys got any ideas?
There are commercially available powders that can only be purchased by the ton. These powders are not available on the shelf at the local shooting emporium. They are widely used for commercial loading of ammunition and for several government and Nato contractors.
I'd like to get some loads worked up for my wives 325. I got some 150 Sierras that I plan to down load to the 2900fps range. Should be great for target practice and deer. To many irons in the fire right now though, if I have to I'll just stick with the factory 200gr Accubonds, they shoot pretty sweet...
