I moved to northeast Iowa 24 years ago and I was introduced to turkey hunting. I tagged the first one in the spring of 1991.... my largest to date at 28 1/4 lbs. Every year I anticipate the coming of spring and the upcoming season. While driving the dirt roads to my clients farms I watch the fields for birds. Every spring they show up in the same fields to strut.
I started out with a gun and tagged at least one bird every spring (most years two birds). I then went to archery and tagged 5 birds & enjoyed the challenge. With the business growing, time was limited and I switched to blackpowder and really like that. Now a days it's either the shot gun or blackpowder. Much time is also spent taking out beginning kids and old friends. Two years ago was the closest to a shutout as I tagged on the next to last day. Never shot a jake in Iowa (except in fall huts where it's totally a meat hunt).
Today marks 24 years in a row of success, for spring birds, as I tagged this 22 lb. bird this evening with the Baretta Urika. 22 lbs, 3/4 inch spurs & about a 9 inch beard. A two year old bird.
I am blessed.
At 55 years old I wonder how many more years????
good luck to all
