This year I elected to do a management hunt with Wyoming game and fish. These are on private land but are open to the public. A game and fish representative has to be with you.
This hunt was just for cows and the terrain sucked! Lots of steep snow covered hills but elk were everywhere!
We were climbing one hill and you could smell the “swamp butt” elk smell about 200 yards before the crest. I went ahead and loaded the 7-30 waters TC contender pistol at that point and got the shooting sticks ready.
As we crested the hill about 100 head were in a tight heard but all vitals were obscured by grass and timber. I pushed forward 30 yards to gain some elevation and they saw us and started to bolt. One cow made the mistake of stepping away from the group and turning broad side.
I took a standing position with shooting sticks and leveled the 14” 7-30 water contender pistol. The 4x leupold scope’s cross hairs centered the elk just behind the shoulder. I theN pressed the trigger letting a 120 grain Nosler ballistic tip fly and the impact was audible at just under 150 yards. The elk turned around and I reloaded and hit it again with almost the same shot placement on the other side of the elk.
The real treat for all of this was the pack out....game and fish hiked back out and retrieved their 4 wheeler and even helped de bone the elk!
Later that night several friends and myself consumed 3/4 of a back strap at the VFW! No better way to end a season and now I am all tagged out with 8 Wyoming animals taken this season.
