'Crowds' may be peculiar to other western states such as Colorado or Utah. In Idaho, hunter congestion almost always is a problem related to proximity to nearby towns or 'cities'. And there's no sanctuary from the competition in designated wilderness areas either. You'll encounter them on foot or horseback, though certainly far less frequently. Idaho is a complex state as far as 'best places to hunt'. One area may offer better whitetail numbers, mule deer densities or trophy quality. Other areas of the state might offer better bear or elk hunting. For me, the 'line of demarcation' has always been the Salmon River with the better elk densities found north of this area in Idaho. But that's just my personal opinion and not an absolute. There are some very good elk hunting pockets of opportunity elsewhere in the state. If I were you I would look elsewhere within the Gem State to hunt elk. And if you do succeed in finding ' your own private Idaho' let us know. Good luck
