my son and I left on Thanksgiving morning for southern az. these guys paid us a visit while setting up camp.

the first couple of days provided us with only a couple of does and a lot of sweat. we had to stock up on some more ice and the store keeper gave us some good info. Monday morning gave us a nice sunrise.

later Monday morning I saw the two biggest coues bucks I have ever seen. unfortunately they were hauling ass away from me not to be seen again.

Wednesday would be our last full day to hunt. All I saw were does but my jumped another big buck who never presented a shot. a little while later 3 bucks showed themselves and he took the best one of the group.

We found some nice sheds along the way. remember guys, this was an over the counter leftover tag. any of you guys can do this. that last pic gives you an idea of the body size of an average buck. take care

Congrats to your son on a good looking Coues buck and to you what I'm sure was a great hunt, even though you tagged soup instead of a buck ;)

Also, I'm impressed with your Cliff's Notes version of the story, but I'm not sure bare bones will get us through the long winter ahead. We need more details to fuel our hunting dreams while we hibernate. Were those Goulds turkeys? Did you see any international "guests" of our fair country? Stink pigs? The vegetation down there sure does look different - I'm intrigued.

I have yet to hunt Southern AZ, but I'm changing my deer app strategy in 2015 - not sure if I'll go leftover rifle tags or stick with my OTC archery tags if I don't draw preferred units. I've never killed a Coues but they look like they pack out easier than floppy eared deer and I've had a few close calls from a nice buck 2 straight years about an hour from my house in 22. I may put in for archery javelina in a southern unit next year and combo hunt deer and pigs in January.

Well done!

yes DDD those are gould's turkey. my son saw a lot more of those. actually has a video of two toms fighting. its pretty cool. only 5 tags for the spring hunt. for the amount of turkey that we've seen the last two times we've been there they easily raise the tag amount. also saw a few javelina.
