Smoked prime rib, mashed potatoes, rolls, and roasted Brussels sprouts Pumpkin pie for dessert. Normally do ham but changing it up this year.
Just my wife and I last night so we did sliced meat and cheese with veggies
My dad used to make a “Texas” chip dip. Taco seasoned ground meat in bottom of baking dish, layer of refried beans, layer of queso, and topped with shredded cheese.
Sliders have been good. Can also do bbq sandwich sliders. Instead of full on poppers we just wrap venison strips in bacon and a...
If you already have 2 dogs I wouldn’t hire the dogs. I would also talk to the two people bringing dogs and make sure they are ok hunting together. Just easier to know expectations ahead. If someone is training a pointer you don’t want the lab busting in to flush without command.
I remember...
I try to buy from sellers with an inspection period. At least enough to look it over at my FFL and make sure it is as advertised. These sellers normally allow returns but you pay a restocking fee.
I’ve never had a problem but you need to see what the inspection period is. I also ask the...
Practical would be a lightweight 280 AI possibly Weatherby Mark V.
With soul would be a solid bolt action with a nice Walnut stock. Probably in 257 Roberts or 7x57.
What decade was that? I wish I could buy a new #1 for $265. I really would like a #1 but I have a hard time passing on a good bolt gun to spend what it would take.
I went through two pairs of Danners. The last was a pair of Pronghorns that lasted multiple seasons. I went to replace them but the fit was different. I tried to break them in but I couldn’t handle it and returned them. They don’t seem to be the quality they used to be.
I finished my second...
It depends how far your average shot is. I hunt with a semi auto and pump so I run and IC or Mod depending what I expect. If I had a O/U I would probably run IC then Mod. If hunting grouse I’d do skeet/IC. Late season pheasants maybe mid/full.
I have always like the Howa 1500 for the price. I also was impressed with my wife’s Rugar American for the price and out of the box accuracy.
Also can look at the used market. I am surprised what you can find if you are patient. If you’re shooting a lot of rounds I’d try to go with a bull...
One point to clarify is I do not recommend extended dry aging for wild game. First most of us don’t have the best storage conditions to ensure proper chilling and aging without the risk of spoilage. Second game being leaner you will loose more meat due to the dehydration that occurs.
I...
I am glad they were caught but am sure they will get less than they deserve.
For those caught I wonder how many get away. Then consider how many more tags may be issued to law abiding sportsmen if not for poaching.
I understand not wanting to stomp through a “sanctuary”. However, once you have a hit animal there you need to exhaust all resources to recover the animal. He is either lazy or incompetent. If he lost an animal after an honest effort that’s ok. Because he doesn’t want to mess up a future...
Any meat you grind you want to remove any contamination/foreign matériels (hair, dirt, fecal, ingests, etc).
I also remove as much fat as can be done reasonably. The deer species have a more saturated fat than beef. This leaves a less desirable mouth feel and higher temperature to render. Ok...
I don’t like getting too short on shot guns for wing shooting. A 26” barrel
is already pretty responsive. I find I tend to miss more birds with my 26” than my 28”. My swing isn’t as smooth and I have to focus more on keeping it smooth.
That’s just me though. I’m sure it would be deadly if...
Most butchers use a 22mag or 22lr even if they aren’t using captive bolt. Unless it’s a bull you don’t need more. It’s more about location and angle. I’ll try attaching an image. You go from one side of the poll and dra a line to the opposite eye. Then repeat that on the other side of the...
