Well, card got a hit for elk. Either me, my wife or son drew a bull tag. I'm thinking my son drew it since I don't have a hit for any of the youth hunts, I put him in for.
I'm sure there were a few really nice bulls taken, I didn't see anything over mid 300''. There is quite a bit of private property in that unit and getting to some of the best habitat is very hard and as early of a hunt as it is I'd worry about meat spoil. With all that said there's some nice...
My 10-year-old drew his first elk tag this year and we decided to pick up a javo tag since there's a few in the area we were going to be hunting in. Now he's been on quite a few hunts with me from Black bear in AK, Antelope in NV and Deer and Javo in AZ, but we were both pretty stoked for this...
I found out that the bull was running with group of cows and still fighting with other bulls 2 weeks later so that made me feel a little better about him making it.
2023 Elk Hunt
I scouted a handful of weekends and was not seeing the elk numbers I was expecting. Glassed, hiked into nasty thick stuff, glassed some more, hiked some more and covered a lot of miles. It wasn't until a few weekends before the hunt that I started to see mature branch antler...
From what I gathered they do allow hunters on the ranch, but you have to go through a guide they lease to, and NDOW still pays them for crop damage. Thats crazy about the elk in Idaho.
My wife had it a few years back. Good Luck with the ranchers, they complain about elk depredation but don't allow public access. Also, I'd plan on wearing hunter orange, it can get a little dicey up there with everyone hunting so close together.
It can be tough up there that time of year since they have been getting chased all season long. Id check out the ag field on the southeast side of the unit. seems like there is always a few elk out there.
Bummer about not getting your goat out there. My son has his first big game hunt coming up in a few weeks. It's a youth cow hunt, we're planning on hunting the northern part of the unit. I'm assuming that's where you spent most of your hunt, any insight on cow elk spotting or behavior in that...
Thanks, I was finally able to locate a few nice bulls the last couple of weekends. Heading up there Wednesday to scout again before the hunt starts on Saturday. Cant wait!
How was the hunting pressure during your hunt? Been up scouting a few times, glassed a few cows and spikes but yet to see any branch antler elk, all have been on the Utah side. I've spent 3-4 AM and PM sessions glassing Nevada side but just deer and antelope. I hiked around Debbs and found old...
Hey treedagain I saw you mentioned in another forum for Elk in NV 091. I was lucky enough to draw that tag this year and was wondering if you were willing to share and insight?
