Finally circling back around to this thread, but we were successful. Three tags, three days, three bulls. Was able to call a bull in for my dad and he shot him at thirty yards, which was by far the highlight of this hunt. They were still bugling which made for a fun hunt. Thank you to everyone...
I got back Monday and it was dry for sure. There was water up high in the lakes, ponds, and springs but very little sign around them. I would imagine it is because all the good food is dried up around those sources. I did not check lower elevations. Not sure how much snow and rain they got...
Well I have officially drawn Unit 66 in Colorado for first rifle elk. which is a relieve because I didn't want to go back to square one with my E-scouting. Anyways I understand there is a drought in SW Colorado at the moment. I hunted Unit 55 on a dry year, but while hunting during the day I was...
Sunday was one of the first warm and clear mornings we have had here in Missouri, so my guess is that has a lot to do with it. Personally I think it may help me if they start breeding a little early this year. With the amount of hens I have been seeing it may be a little difficult to call one in...
Well I have been e-scouting for a Colorado elk hunt for the past two months and sent in my application last week. Suddenly I had a lot more free time in the evenings and I wasn't sure what to do with myself. Saturday night while drinking an adult beverage on my deck after working cows the better...
Honest question. What is your definition of way up high? 12,000+? 11,000+? I ask because on a previous mule deer hunt all everyone said to me was they were all up high, so I went high, as in 11,500+ and it was a ghost town. Dropped in elevation for a couple days and finally found them around...
During the winter I strictly focus on gaining strength so normal exercises (squats, lunges, curls, 5,000 types of presses, etc..) with heavy weight and low reps and little to no cardio. Once spring hits I start mixing in cardio, hikes with a heavy pack, and switch to lower weight with higher...
Hunted there last year the last week of September. We talked to a lot of hunters that did not see anything or hear a single bugle. We hunted a little ways off of the road in areas where there were no trails and had a different experience. We were not covered up in them, but we heard bugles...
Hello from Missouri again! Planning a first rifle elk trip to Unit 66 this year. Depending on how scouting goes a few days before season I will be prepared to hike into the wilderness areas to hunt. Was wondering if anyone that has hunted the area or lives there could tell me if there are any...
Thank you! I plan on calling the forest service and biologist, but I want to get as much information as possible first. I would imagine they get a lot of calls and I don't want to have to call them multiple times. From what you have seen are timbers cuts from the same year worth hunting or is...
Hello from Missouri folks. Started hunting out west two years ago. So far I have been mule deer hunting in Unit 55 and OTC archery elk in Unit 14 and I am thoroughly hooked. Anyways, looking at burning my points in Unit 66 for First Rifle Elk this year. In my research I have been informed there...
