Got out twice so far. First day was a quick trip before work on opener. Got cut short by getting called into work early but still got a sharpie.
The next one I didn't get onto any birds but it was the best hunt of my life. I got my 4 year old daughter out on her first hunt. We only went about a...
Especially when I'm down to the last few days of the season and I might be stuck at work. On top of that my daughter who is 3.5yrs old got to watch it happen. She was pretty excited and luckily he folded immediately and expired without any drama. I couldn't have gotten her a better/cleaner first...
Sitrep: 7:50 the 3x4 got 10' from my fence and walked parallel to my land then headed off. I'll add two pick of him and if anyone has recommendations for phoneskope or similar products I'll take them.
I'm not an archer but I did think about grabbing my 4" .44mag for the challenge but at this point I'd rather just put it down than risk it. Maybe I'll practice with the .44 next year with the intent of using it if this situation pops up again.
Update: it's turning into a more stimulating hunt than just see a buck and shoot. Got home from work yesterday at about 1:30 and the buck, a smaller buck and four does were bedded down at the crest of a hill 20 yards onto my neighbor's land. I only have 5 acres so it's a pretty small shooting...
A week ago I told my wife "I care more about the process than the product" when she asked me why I spent so much time on fruitless hikes with my rifle. I want to believe that I care more about the experience of a hunt, making a game plan and executing it to out smart my quarry than just shooting...
I have a Glock 29 that I conceal carry everyday but when I am poking around in grizzly country I carry my 329PD. Luckily I have not shot either out if necessity yet so I can't say if one is more effective than the other. I do kick around the idea of carrying the Glock into the backcountry just...
I took my bear fence into there and still came no where near 90lbs. Here is my lighterpack breakdown with a bear fence. I too go in there solo and sleep a lot better with the fence around me, I have even kicked around the idea of taking it with me when I leave camp for the day and set it up in...
I picked up a Benelli Ultra Light this summer and so far have taken Sage Grouse, Sharptail Grouse, and Prairie Chickens with it. I think it is an ideal upland semiauto. Reliable and at about 6 pounds the lightest semi auto 12 gauge that I know of. If you are like me and often average hiking more...
I use the MR quick draw sling. I carry my rifle with the muzzle pointing down. I prefer to carry this way in general but if you go muzzle up the rifle will want to roll off your shoulder more.
As a SD native who lives is Eastern MT, I can say that I will kill more pheasants on East River public land in five days over Christmas in than I will over the entire season in Eastern MT. There is an appeal to going on long drives for the adventure of it but if getting birds out weighs your...
I carry a S&W 329PD, it the lightest .44 mag you can get. It's ideal to carry a lot and shoot a little. I don't go out to fill a tag with it but if the opportunity arose I'd consider a 20-40 yard shot on a deer or elk. If you were more wanting something for bear defense and not so much concerned...
I run the MR quick draw and use it on both my Metcalf and Pop Up 28 and have had no issues. I do carry my rifle muzzle down so it doesn't catch tree limbs as much. That makes it ride different which probably accounts for why I don't have issues with my rifle rolling off my shoulder. If I were to...
