I've had a cabelas 3/4 hp for about 25 years, it's been great. I split the cost with 2 other guys and we share it, dozens of elk and other critters gone through it, plenty big enough. The cutting blade broke one time, and i think we replaced the cutting disks once. No first hand knowledge of 1/2 hp.
I had that scope on my 300 WSM for about 20 years, recently replaced it with a Swarovski Z3 3-10x42, which is a bit pricier but just under 13 oz. Nothing really wrong with the Leopold but I'm happy with the newer scope. Still have a 2.5-8x on a back up rifle.
They definitely like the ashes in a fir pit, so not having a fire might help. I guess they like the mineral content. One time after eating the ashes the cattle decided to lick my tent, cow slobber embedded with ashes all over, what a mess. At least they didn't break down the tent.
