    Looking for a gps

I have an older Garmin Dakota 20 laying around somewhere. I loved that little unit, but don't use it any longer due to smartphone tech. It has an old land ownership chip in it as well for some portion of the western US that cost $100 at the time. I would make a you a good deal on it. PM me if...

    2024 Kodiak Blacktail hunt!

Awesome! thanks so much. I currently have the 4' fiberglass with some round post connectors I bought on Amazon. That combo is pretty heavy but was quick and dirty so I can put up and test out at home. The wad of 4' poles doesn't seem very super cub friendly ;)

Optics review - Vortex UHD 12x50 binoculars

I have the 12x50 UHD, and really like them. Clarity is great, pretty darn good edge to edge. these are my mule deer, and other open country optic. I always carry a tripod, and sometimes a spotter depending on the hunt. FWIW, I have found a few ways to help stabilize them when 'freehanding'. I...

    2024 Kodiak Blacktail hunt!

Don't mean to side track the post, but can you give some details on your posts and fence tester? Looks like you made them out of carbon arrow shafts. I have the same charger and tape, but trying to figure out lightweight posts for air transport. Thanks!

    What type of hunting knife?

My hunting knives are all from Bark River, all have slight to moderate drop points - which I love. Blade length 3.25"-3.75". What I'm carrying depends on the animal being hunted and terrain. Steels are A2, CPM3V, and Elmax. Total weight ranges like 2.5 to 6 oz. I have wood and micarta handle...

Another meat safety question. Elk not recovered for 24 hours.

Glad you were able to salvage some, and lots of good advice here. Great job sticking with it. Congrats to you and your son. I have had to leave 2 cow elk overnight, one archery season lows in 50s, one rifle lows in teens. Got lucky and didn’t lose any meat either time. I deboned the archery cow...

Hunting off Skis - Digging out a Troll

Do it! And post your pictures back here. I have not had the opportunity to use my BC touring gear for elk. But have thought about it and discussed with a buddy of mine... As for cross country skis: I have pulled heavy loads in pulk sleds (multiple marine batteries, other equipment) behind a...

Why I prefer GaiaGPS over ONX

Gaia is a great app. I have never had any issues downloading maps for offline use, and do it all the time. Prior to their buyout by Outside, I emailed them and they added the new (at the time) timber company lands in Idaho to the hunting layers on pretty short notice.

Why I prefer GaiaGPS over ONX

Do it and don't look back. I got Gaia in 2012 and never left. I also used to make my own maps in geoPDF and run Avenza, as most of this data is totally free and back in those days none of the smartphone apps had the kind of data you could download from agency GIS data portals. But now, for...

New Mexico unit 51 setting my goal too high?

I hunted the 3rd rifle in 2015. I started a brand new job so could only squeeze in 3 hunt days of the 5. I shot a rag horn but saw two decent bulls and heard bugling every day. There are some good suggestions above for sure. People will be moving elk around, you might be able to capitalize. I...

Still just happily wearing lowa Tibet hi gtx, never found anything I liked better In lightweight boots that fit like the Tibet. Crispi Colorado wide seemed ok but had some discomfort in the underfoot around the heel. Tried on many others and returned. so Altra lonepeak mids are what I use for...

    Wild sheep and disease

All animals that initially test positive by PCR will be recaptured the following year, then removed if still shedding. There are some mistakes in the article unfortunately. Early on in the disease outbreak phase, a higher percentage of animals will have active infections, so aggressive culling...

    New Tire Opinions

I have a Tacoma but use E rated tires. I don’t tow, but drive a ton of forest service and other logging roads. Falken wildpeak are currently on it, zero complaints. A great tire for my needs. save a couple hundred bucks compared with a good year or bf Goodrich. Durarac were good but got noisy...
