Tip if you ever need to call/text 911

No, FindMeSAR and what3words are not the same. W3W is proprietary FindMeSAR is open source If you use FindMeSAR to give *any* 911 dispatcher lat lng in decimal degrees, they automatically know what to do with that info. If you give a 911 dispatcher w3w they might go "huh?" The 911 call...

My understanding is that SAR in the USA is usually a combination of volunteers plus government resources.

    Maps, maps and more maps

A few years ago I posted here in fireside about Gmap4 which was a general purpose web map I developed based on the Google map API (Application Program Interface). But then Google slashed the amount of free usage it allowed for its map API and as a result I shutdown most usage of Gmap4. What...

Tip if you ever need to call/text 911

I have posted about this before here in hunttalk but it has been a few years so time for a refresher. Assume you are outside somewhere, something bad happens and you need to contact 911. Since you are not at a street address the best location data you can give to the dispatcher is (1) latitude...

Tips for calling 911 with a cell phone - A peek under the hood

Thanks for the kind words. Here is a followup idea to help find people that have called 911 and are not able to give a street address or adequately describe their location. As explained in the report I posted, when someone with a cell phone calls 911 the wireless carrier is supposed to make...

Tips for calling 911 with a cell phone - A peek under the hood

And a 911 dispatcher can ask a caller if they are using an iPhone. If so, the dispatcher can walk the caller through the process of getting coordinates from the compass app. But keep in mind that the coordinates on the iPhone compass app do not update if you move while the compass is open. If...

Tips for calling 911 with a cell phone - A peek under the hood

I am a software developer working with online maps and location technology. Earlier this year I became interested in what happens when someone with a cell phone calls 911. In particular I wanted to know the details of how the 911 dispatcher learns the *location* of the caller. What kind of...

    maps

Below is a link that can display roads and trails that are open to some kind of motorized use in the national forests. Each time you open the map and turn data layers on/off the data comes straight from a GIS server run by the USFS to your screen. The map opens at a random spot in CO south of...

Online public land maps with geolocation

A few months ago I started this thread to make people aware of a project I was undertaking as a public service to make recreation related GIS (Geographical Information System) data easily available. GIS data has two parts. One part displays symbols, lines and areas (i.e. polygons) on a map...

Online public land maps with geolocation

Glad you found my site. The internet is just amazing. I don't have any real order for which states get done before others. After Oregon I likely will do one or two eastern states. It takes awhile since this is a 'spare time' project. But I will certainly get to CO and WY in due course...

Online public land maps with geolocation

I will certainly produce map links for Montana. However I have several other states in mind to do before I get to MT. After Wisconsin the next one will likely be Oregon.

Online public land maps with geolocation

Thanks for the kind words. Opps! I forgot to include an important point in my post. The map legends are really important to help you understand the story the map is telling you. To see the map legends, click the button in the upper left corner that says "About this map".

Government agencies also have all kinds of map information that is useful for all kinds of outdoor activities from hunting to 4-wheeling to horse riding to hiking...

Wilks brothers true colors are shining through.....

Here is an idea for anyone that wants to use their GPS to locate section corners/lines either in this area or anywhere else. Here is the concept: 1. Find the area where you are going on the Gmap4 maps...

Wilks brothers true colors are shining through.....

I was delighted to read that BLM is sending in a survey crew. Assuming that crew produces survey grade coordinates, then I volunteer to produce a map link that shows those surveyed corners with section lines running between them. That map will shed a lot of light on the accuracy of both (1)...

Thanks for posting coordinates. I suspect this discussion would benefit if more people did so. Below is a link that starts Gmap4 and shows that those coordinates (46 45.702 -108 53.126) are at least 400 feet inside private property. Zoom in more and you will see the 2-track that apparently...

    1. Did you make a note of your coordinates and can you share them? 2. What are you telling us that you were 15 feet away from? A cadastral line on your GPS screen? Or something else? Reports like this would be considerably more useful if the coordinates were posted so we could look at that...

Ask that they not send the data in a shp (shape) file. A KML, GPX or text file is much easier for us citizens to work with.
