44hunter45's 2024 backcountry Idaho Moose semi-live hunt thread.

Strong work, amigo. Sometimes you can earn it and still not go home with meat to show for it. But still, good effort. I didnt see a moose in my two weeks when I drew a tag in 2022.

Is 'Useful electric snow blower" an oxymoron?

I have one of each, a gas blower at the lake house and an electric one at home. So far the electric one serves the purpose in town. It's en E-go from Ace. Not cheap but it starts and goes. Two batteries wear out about when I do. I have a small lot and also clear several feet of a cul de sac...

    Montana mule deer rut activity

Well, if that buck looks small you have to realize that I am 8 -foot six-inches tall. Thing's a booner.

    Montana mule deer rut activity

Yeah that's my Dad's Kelty, circa 1983. I broke it out for old time's sake and it worked like a charm.

    Montana mule deer rut activity

I got a 4x4 on Friday Nov 7 that was tending a doe aggressively. But his neck was not swollen and his glands were not too stinky. It was a fabulous hunt and I will write more about it later. I called him and a lion in with a doe bleat.

    Whitetail hunting the rain

Two best times to hunt is when it's raining and when it ain't raining. (Stole that line from PF McManus.)

Hunting elk with my 90-year-old dad

A year ago, dad broke a hip while changing a tire. He is 90 and still loves elk hunting near our family farm in northern Idaho. He kept at rehab and is back on his feet. He walks well and is remarkably strong, but gets tired so our hunts were just morning outings. Not like the old days in the...

Also Orofino. Stopping by the A & W with my high school buddies after a week backpacking in the Mallard-Larkin and slurping down every drop of ice cream the place had. That's a lot of ice cream.

    Idaho Unit 8A EATS

There used to be a place called the Elk Tavern in Bovill. This would be in the early 80s and I was maybe 13 or 14. My dad and I killed a buck early and stopped there for a late breakfast. I remember to bleary-eye, hungover pair of loggers sitting at the bar. First one said, "I'll take bacon and...

Dang. Who woulda thought that Deary would become a gentrified place to buy pricey cheese. I mean, can you still get a burger at Fuzzy's Tavern?

I'll just say that rig will fit right in at Harvard... or Princeton... for that matter. (Inside joke.)

Let’s see your historic skulls (bison, Dino, etc)

I found some hadrosaurus fossils (what we used to call duck-billed dinosaurs) in the Hell Creek formation (I think) near the CMR. I took photos and the Museum of the Rockies was able to identify them. Pretty cool.

Let’s see your historic skulls (bison, Dino, etc)

And deny you the thrill of discovery? I will say it was within a day's walk from the US border with Alberta. It was before 2001, so one could do so in those days without triggering predator drones launching missiles at you.

Let’s see your historic skulls (bison, Dino, etc)

This is the best bison skull I've found. I found it in a tributary of the Milk River in Alberta. Wasn't sure of the legality of getting it across the border so I left tossed it back in the creek. The creek had flooded the spring and we found a dozen skulls and partial skulls that day. Feel free...

    Ultra light fishing set up.

It telescopes into the handle so it's maybe 1 inch across and 16 inches long.

    Ultra light fishing set up.

Consider a tenkara fly rod. I have a nine-foot rod -- with line, a pad of flies and a leader. The entire outfit weighs 5 ounces. I have caught pounds and pounds of trout with it, particularly on small streams and cool mountain lakes where fish are near the shore. The main limitation is lack of...
