Totally understand, Michael. I would like to go again, and even though I feel I'm in good shape, I know that my age is an obstacle on very remote DIY hunts. I did get my moose 2 years ago, and would like to do it again, but damn....they are a lot of work! I would like to go back in the 40 Mile...
Congrats on another successful hunt, Michael. Curious to why you say it's your last remote Alaska hunt. I have been tossing around the idea of going with 40 Mile again and doing a caribou hunt.
On our first hunting trip to Alaska, my son who had a DUI 2 years previous while in college, was at first denied entry at the Saskatchewan border at Portal. He was taken into a room and interrogated for about an hour, I was then led into a room an interrogated for about the same time. My son was...
My rifle is zeroed at 100 yards, as most of the deer I shoot are inside of 100 yards. I figured that in the area I was moose hunting, most shots would be about the same.
I shoot HMS Berger 130gr VLD's in my gun, as they have proven to group well out of my rifle. I know most will say they are too lite for moose, but the rifle has a lot of sentimental meaning to me. My father took 12 moose with the same rifle back in the 50's, 60's, and 70's, albeit Canadian moose...
This was my 3rd DIY hunting trip to Alaska, after 2 successful caribou hunts, I was going with a resident friend for moose. We were approx. 270 miles north of Fairbanks, and had river access with my friend's airboat. We made it to the river and had camp set up by 6pm on the 11th, and spent the...
I'm a mere 50 days from leaving for another adventure in Ak. I will be on the Middle Fork Koyukuk from about the 10th through the end of moose season (25th). Any input on the fishing during the month of September would be appreciated.
Well damn.....haven't been on this site for about a week, and it looks like I missed out. I've done 2 successful caribou hunts in AK, one of them being with 40 Mile in 2010. Very good people to work with, and I hope to go with them again in the near future.
Nice hunt report, Michael. You always seem to get it done. Haven't been back since 2014, but will be doing a moose hunt next September down the Koyukuk.
Looks like another great adventure, Michael. Sure wish I could make the trip every year, but not in the cards just yet. I am working on a plan for a float hunt for caribou in 2019, and then moose hunts for 2020 and 2022. You've been blessed, and I enjoy reading your hunt reports and looking at...
Hey, Michael, good luck with your hunt next fall. Hope you and your buddy both get a shot at a bull. Did you get to go this fall? Because of some business issues, I have had to put a return trip on hold for a couple of years. Trying to get things lined out to go back in "18 or '19. Always...
jpauli, I used 70 North, in 2014, and although the pilot, Bob, was a good pilot, I can't recommend them. Very unorganized outfit. I was in contact with the owner, Mike, several times over an 8 month period, and 2 times within a couple of days getting to Happy Valley. None of the staff at Happy...
Congrats on another successful AK hunt, Michael. Caribou and their where-a-bouts is sure unpredictable. Glad you were able to tag out and get some meat for the family, which is more important than head gear. Looking forward to my next trip north, next May, and then another moose/caribou float...
Good luck to you Michael, and all the others fortunate enough to be able to hunt Alaska this fall. I'll be waiting to hear and read the reports. I'm not able to go this year, but will be doing a spring black bear hunt next May on Kupreanof Island. Knute
Good job, Mike. Nice bull. Sorry the moose didn't cooperate. My hunt this year was successful, as all 3 of us got a caribou. Our trip had its challenges, mainly due to bugs and warm weather, as it was an early August hunt, but it was beautiful country. Time to start planning the next trip! Knute
My son and I did a super cub drop hunt with 40-Mile Air, in 2010. As stated, you will be limited to 50 lbs. per person on your packed gear. On our fly out we layered most all of our clothes, and stuffed everything that was small enough into pour pockets. This saved weight that wasn't counted...
