I've killed them everywhere between 40 and 650 yards, but I'd say the majority of your shots will be 250-350 yards. Get comfortable with standing shots from a tripod or shooting sticks. The brush is often too high to get get into a kneeling or prone position.
To locate them, get some elevation...
Not technically a resident. I've hunted oryx in New Mexico every year since 2019. New Mexico is generous with hunting opportunities on the Army range for active duty military guys.
When NM keeps pulling your name to hunt Oryx, you keep hunting Oryx.
This was a population management hunt just outside of WSMR. With only one day to make it happen, I got to work quickly. We found a group in the distance early on, but they didn't want to play, so we pulled out to find more...
Congrats! I killed my Booner bull on Nunivak in 2020. Awesome experience on a rare animal.
Make sure to post your final score sheet. I'm curious to see the final measurements.
I suppose it wouldn't be fitting to end a hunting season without an obligatory NM Oryx harvest, so here you go.
The hunt started slow, but when we found a few cruising across the desert hills, it didn't take long to get work done. I picked out the best one in the group and put it down with one...
My opinion is fix it. I like to restore animals to their prime state as a sign of respect for their life.
I have no problem leaving it broken for character though either.
I scored big in the Kodiak registration area this year!
After a long night of 60-80 MPH gusts with the tent pressed against our faces as we tried to sleep, Kodiak welcomed us to a beautiful blue bird day.
While viewing from camp, this 8+ year old Billy was calling to me from furthest reaches...
My WSM is a custom barreled South Carolina Win 70. The barrel is a 26" 10 twist. I use H4350 with this load in Norma brass and a Fed 210M primer.
I've been very successful with heavy bullets in a 300 WSM.
2022 successful trips with .308 Caliber 200 grain Accubond fired from a 300 WSM. One and done @ 385 yards on the NM Oryx.
Same rifle, same load. Alaska Moose @ 400 yards. Also one and done.
