I'm Trying to Decide on a New All Around Rifle.

I've said this before in more than one platform, but you will not be sad to own a Tikka. I've had several and they're all shooters, all very reliable and lightweight. I've personally never shot an elk with a .270, but people do it every fall. As to your scope, I've seen people bashing Vortex...

    Pac-Nor pre-fit barrels

I've built a few rifles using pre-fit barrels, I've used Criterion, X-Caliber, and Preferred (got a dud with this one). Anyone ever used Pac-Nor?

    280 AI vs. 7 PRC

280AI is a pretty impressive cartridge. Mine is built to be a bit more of a bench rifle, it's a little heavier than I want hump around in the mountains all day, so I'm now building another for that purpose off a stainless Tikka action. My personal opinion is there's really nothing I wouldn't...

    Boots for extra wide feet?

I too am in the club - feet short and wide with very high arches. The only boots I've ever found that work for me is Keen. Keens get a bad rap for not being very durable, and it's not undeserved, but you should look into the Targhee IV. It's a much sturdier design than previous models. The pair...

NOSLER wants to see your success

Here's a cow elk I shot about a week and a half ago. This one was all about the stalk. I was hunting with a friend, Chris, and his 13yo son, David. David shot a cow and while we were preparing to process that one, we noticed a herd move out into a wide park up higher. Chris insisted I go after...

SOLD Remington 700 Classic in 300 WBY

I would certainly grab this myself, but with my torn up shoulder I can barely manage shooting my 30-06.

Minimum Elk Caliber. what do you think it is.

Last 3 elk I shot were all cows and I used a .284 Winchester. 150gn Nosler Accubond.

NOSLER wants to see your success

Not the hugest mulie ever, but a good meat-buck (our freezers are empty). About 230yds, quartering away with a .284 Win. 150gn Nosler Accubond, always seems to do the trick.

    VV Powders

My .284 Win seems to love VV150 with F210 primers. I have several very accurate hunting loads with this powder/primer combo using different bullets. Granted, these are lighter weight bullets for deer-size critters, mostly. In the 140gn range, but yes, my experience has been very positive using...

Factory Stock - Tikka T3X Super Varmint

Building a 280 AI off a T3X action. I'm using an X-Caliber carbon fiber wrapped barrel, which is the diameter of a varmint barrel. Probably a CTR stock would also work with some modifications. If you have one in your closet, I might be interested in buying it for a reasonable price.

Anybody have 154gn 7mm Interbonds? Without the cannelure?

    Question about savage axis

There's a Savage 110 on GunBroker right now in 280AI for $550. I've had good luck with 110's. You ought to grab this one before I do. 👍

    Savage 110 stock - 🤮

I recently built a .308 on a Savage 110 Ultralite receiver. My goal with this rifle is to be a well-rounded, LIGHT WEIGHT, mountain rifle. So far, it fits that purpose. But I had an oldish factory stock leaning in the corner I used, just because it weighs practically nothing and... there it was...

    Loading to mag length

I do this in my Savage 110s and Tikka, but not my Remington 700s. In my -06 (a Rem700) it actually doesn't take much before I'm jamming the bullet into the lands. There's just a lot more room in the internal mag of a 700 than there is in a detachable mag of the others.

    .284 Winchester Handloads?

Yeah, sorry that took so long. With 140gn Accubonds I'm consistently getting about .75 MOA with charge weight of 46.8gn. Average MV is 2813fps. Not sure how far off the lands I am, but my COL measured with a comparator from base-to-ogive (BTO in my notes) is 2.378". Hornady Interbonds have been...

    .284 Winchester Handloads?

My .284 is not picky, but I've used 140gn Accubonds, and 139gn Hornady Interbonds and Interlocks (BTSP). All were sub-MOA with the Interbonds being the best (I'm still pissy that Hornady discontinued them). As far as charge weight and such, I'll have to check my notes. I'm out of town at present.

    Turkey help

Another thing to remember is a turkey's eyesight is every bit as keen as an elks nose. If you moved toward him at 200yds, it's not inconceivable that he might have seen some movement through the brush that made him nervous. As far as calling goes, as a general rule of thumb, you want to sound...

    .284 Winchester Handloads?

Mine is a 23" carbon fiber wrapped barrel on a short action Savage 110 Ultralite receiver. The chamber is standard SAAMI specs.
