Both kids are involved in fall sports (and I coach one of them) so I put in for an either sex elk permit only in the HD where our cabin is located. Yeah, we could hunt in other areas with a general tag, but are very limited on time for the next couple of years.
In fact I just got the mount hung up at the cabin this week...the funky left antler is unique; I can see damage to the skull behind it where something happened and it fused/grew back together.
She actually has a twin brother that hasn't been drawn for a bull tag so I didn't even apply for her - b/c as luck would have it she would somehow draw again and he wouldn't. I'll probably still buy a pref point this summer for her, but not try to draw again until he gets a shot. And he didn't...
The way the last few years have been here in Montana, there is not much of a chance of hunting in the rain. :) I would prepare for heat and wind. Depends a bit too if you are talking about archery or rifle seasons. My experience is the wind will keep them in timber and hunkered down more...
I hunt up in the Little Snowies-area and echo what these guys have said. There are a lot of elk in the districts and they do cross public on a regular basis - you just have to pick the right spot on the right morning. And remember where there are no cows, there will be no bulls - my experience...
