Meateater Episode 204: It Should Be Difficult To Get Lost Forever

Great episode, and I am looking forward to reading Dial's book.

    Mule in Idaho

Lots of threads on this site specific to your inquiry. Scout on onx. Maybe buy a gohunt membership. Practice shooting.

Ever get robbed on a hunt or traveling to and from a hunt

Had a game camera stolen by snowmobilers recently. I just...don't get it. Also recently my hunting partner had a tree stand stolen. So frustrating.

    Bow hunting/Archery resource

Highly recommend John Dudley's youtube channel and podcast, both under the name 'nockon'. If you search back through both you will find all of the technical, instructional, conceptual, tutorial type content you could ever want.

If you could go back to age 25

I was still in the army at 25, and I’m not that far removed from it, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve only been out a few years now. Any advice for what you all would do in the same situation but 31 instead of 25?!

    2020 begins! NM Oryx down!

That is outstanding! I know very little about the NM exotics. How hard is that tag? How skiddish are the Oryx? Congrats!

SOLO? IS IT POSSIBLE WITH ELK?

Very possibly buddy, you just need a good pack, good boots, lots of snacks, and a renewable water source. I’d also highly recommend trekking poles.

    Tent Options for Under $200

You can get an REI tent for around $200, especially when they are on sale. That’s what I use. Love it.

    Choosing a guide service

The meateater guys recently did a guided Wyoming muley hunt. They did a podcast with the guides - probably worth listening to.

    Montana 2020

I don’t know who your buddy talked to about hotels, I haven’t heard of that being a thing in 704. Maybe he was referring to wall tents. It’s wall tent city in those hills.

    feral cat

Glad to see this. Here to reiterate the fact that outdoor cats are the leading cause of mortality of passerines (song birds) in North America

    Bighorns, Bears, and Bad Blood

Who feels this way about feral horses? Every hunter I know wants them gone.

    New idea's

Swiss steak mushroom style: One of the 'less desirable' steak cuts, such as rounds, bring to room temp Put them in glass baking pan or dutch oven, fully submerged in a mixture of: cream of mushroom soup, dry onion soup, generous amounts of thyme, oregano, and garlic, splash of bone broth Bake...

    New idea's

Something I haven’t seen a ton of that I like to do from time to time is take sirloin and do Philly cheesesteaks. Slice it against the grain before you cook it, then cook it fast and hot. Sauté your diced veggies before cooking the meat. Once the meat is just about ready, combine it all on...

Best rewards credit card for hunters?

Seems like a good card! If there was ever one place I could have one of those sprint shopping sprees in, it would be Sportsman’s.

Best rewards credit card for hunters?

Black and white thinking is for losers. You yourself say ‘it’s all about discipline’. Anyone with solid financial discipline can use a credit card to their advantage and with no harm. Anyways, OP specifically requested the responses not address the validity of credit cards. If you want to start...

What's on your bow sight for pins/ranges?

Black Gold fixed 20/30/40/50/60. Been running it for five years and it has been dead nuts accurate with every arrow change. I should add some distance for practice, but I have not been held back in any hunting scenario (yet) by being confident out to 60.

Best rewards credit card for hunters?

I just use a card from my bank with good cash rewards. The payout is pretty good, and you're not limited or incentivized to spend at a certain location.

Sheep in close proximity to domestics

You could contact the National Wildlife Federation's Missoula office. They have staff that works on this issue specifically, and might have information and/or additional relevant contacts for you.
