Harlequins breed in this area every spring! You can find them on other similar rivers in the right conditions throughout western MT and eastern ID from May to June, and then they will take off to the coast for the rest of the summer.
Big Fin and Corey Jacobsen have some really handy Elk Talk podcast episodes catered to each state. Find that feed and scroll for any of the Montana episodes - should help some. Good luck!
Took advantage of my involuntary downtime in June and hit the parks hard to look for critters and take some photos. I went for almost ten days right as the parks opened in June, and just slept in my truck, as most campgrounds and all lodges were still closed. It was incredible! I usually hit the...
I used the word threshold in my post, and while we cannot know for sure, there obviously is a certain amount of pressure, fair chase, and successful harvest rate that both hunters and biologists deem acceptable when it comes to bowhunting elk here in Montana. Clearly this is not a consensus, but...
That's exactly the point of keeping crossbows out of regular archery season. The behavior of the elk (and often the decent weather) is what allows for successful archery harvest, albeit a notoriously low success rate. It is the 'serious' hunters, as you say, who get it done, especially when it...
Finding decent groups in cottonwood river bottoms in W MT. Hoping maybe this weekend will see some start to pop a little higher in older burned areas. With all of the moisture, I am thinking June for more of my traditional mountain spots.
A large number of colleges, especially small expensive universities, and poorly managed (re: financially) land grant universities will go under because of this. They will not survive the lack of out of state and international tuition that is coming down the pipe. Here in Montana, I am worried...
Second what's stated above. If it was more of a mature ponderosa/doug fir stand that burned, you should be able to glass it pretty thoroughly.
IME, if you can find a small unburned patch surrounded by a lot of historic burn, that's a good place to look for beds.
I think early October, into the second week, is criminally underrated when it comes to Elk hunting. I have been in epic bugle battles and seen plenty of good rut action during this time. I'm not saying it's better than September, and it's not usually when I burn my vacation days, but it...
They are running a sale right now, and I am looking at this safe: https://rhinosafe.com/kodiak-kb5529ecs-55h-x-29w-x-20d-30-long-gun-30-min/
Thoughts appreciated. Thanks!
From FWP:
Nonresident spring turkey and black bear hunting suspended
Following the extension of Montana Gov. Steve Bullock’s directive that out of state travelers must quarantine for 14 days, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks director Martha Williams has suspended nonresident hunting seasons for...
Well, this was an eye-opening list! My interest went to zero while reading this. If we are going to do something in September besides elk hunt, we'll probably stick to the MT unlimited adventure...
Thanks for the helpful reply!
Myself and two of my buddies/hunting partners are interested in this. We are all prior military and experienced backcountry hunters in western MT. My questions for the forum, especially those familiar with Olympic NP/this issue:
What is the goat population like in the park? Relatively small...
I think it's a tad early yet, but I am going to take a poke this weekend. We have had a good amount of moisture and almost the right temps here in western MT. Anyone have any luck yet?
Scott Adams teaches the same thing. Unfortunately, both persuading and being right are nearly impossible on an Internet forum, hence why I don’t usually comment on complex issues like this. Oh well.
