totally agree that much of advice given is great and true. but not all of it was answering a specific questions.
i'm not opposed to hunting a mile from a road/car in thick timber. all of that will be part of my planning/options.
but my #1 focus at the moment is to try and get further away...
all good points. so to add a bit more.
yes i'd be just as happy to be 1 mile out off the trail and take a bull. and in some of my backup spots that seems to be an option.
my 1st area of focus is in such location that due to road / trail / atv access vs Private land around it, my best bet...
i hear that, and yes one can get lucky and have elk walk just past your car-camp set up and you could take it.
i am looking to increase my chances in every and any way possible. i also dont want to deal with what i saw last year: for the first mile or so, on the opening morning hiking in...
If weather permits (its cold) abd if we’re both successful (BIL and i both have Bull tags). I feel comfortable with 7mile max one way (14m each round trip) if not bushwhacking. I figured even if it takes 6 trips (that would include camp packout). i know that sounds like alot of miles but last...
ok. Thanks for all the comments.
i did mention that this is 1st rifle CO (2nd weekend in OCT).while new to hunting overall, not new to hiking and backpacking. i know 1st rifle weather could be 70F to 10F all in the same day. Last year we (i will hunt with my BIL) had single digits at night...
So this will be my 2nd season hunting so still learning about general hunting tactics/etc. I do backpack/hike quite a bit. So going on a 8-10 mile day hike with the dog to fish is normal and not considered difficult with a mid size pack or overnight gear and plenty of elevation gain/drop here...
i dunno. wife and i live in Denver. she had hers done yesterday (free at one of key advertised location) results were given to her later that afternoon via phone call (i think she said it was a call)
i would consider myself to be a complete beginner to hunting.
last year (2019) was my very first season hunting (big or small game). i never fired a rifle till i took my hunter safety the prior year.
*since i joined this forum just recently i didnt think to even share my 1st year hunting...
Went backpacking/camping/scouting this weekend in CO where i have 1st rifle Elk tag.
so about 1 mile into my 5-6 mile hike in, i'm walking a trail and all of sudden to my left (90* degrees) i hear some commotion and a squeal, and as i turn i see 2 cubs climb up a pine tree about 15' up and...
my season is set as:
1st rifle - Bull tag
2nd rifle - Buck tag
3rd rifle - Doe (m.deer) tag
4th rifle - Cow tag
Late Rifle - Doe (pronghorn) tag
did not pull WY antelope this year, so i guess i'll have few open weekends for some small game/upland in Oct/Nov
Negative, this is by looking at your CC pending charges,
i just checked few times over last 30 min on CPW, no updates on there yet.
only thing i have left is Turkey PP as 1st choice and a limited tag as 2nd choice. either way i'm waiting on Fall turkey charge still
mine literally hit after i posted that i got Deer/Antelope hits. and my coworker and i had it where we got charged hours and hours apart in the 1st draw, so keep checking and good luck.
are you primarily looking to GMU35 for access from the river? because there's a road on the GMU25 side that runs along the river most of the way, which gives you access anywhere along that road as its mostly BLM
also if you zoom in, you'll see that Colorado river is in a fairly steep canyon...
i'm doing the opposite. it was 90+F when i went out this weekend. so decided i'll have to come back out later in September when it cools down, to do final re-zero. **i had to re-tighten action screws and side stabilizing screws end of last season before putting rifle away. so for this...
