    Chasing Elk - Opinions Sought

My wife is also taking a semester off work and we have a couple shared trips planned as well. She is not a hunter, but is an avid hiker/climber/skier and we're likely heading to Patagonia and the Canadian Rockies together for a couple trips during our time off. I don't think I would have the $...

    Chasing Elk - Opinions Sought

Appreciate the perspective and it is one that would make sense for most, but with my work schedule I pretty much have to push in the chips. There is no way I can hunt the west before 2027 and it would be 2031 (the next time I can hopefully afford another semester long unpaid leave) after that...

    Chasing Elk - Opinions Sought

I'm a Canadian (Ontario) high school teacher planning to head to the western archery elk woods in Fall 2027. Why 2027? I'll be taking a semester off from work (only way long hunting trips are viable) so conceivably have the entire month of September to hunt. I'll be driving my F-150 out so...

Tales from the Ontario Big Woods - 2024 edition

I've done some deer hunting in the northern Adirondacks as well. ADK wilderness areas are another level of remote and roadless - although the deer up here seem to be quite a bit heavier overall on average.

Tales from the Ontario Big Woods - 2024 edition

Back again for my annual big woods deer hunting recap from north of the border - this is the 2024 edition. I hunt on large tracts of public land in Eastern/Central Ontario. This is classic big woods country - thick lowland conifers, plentiful swamps/creeks, mixed hardwood ridges, rough terrain...

    Gun safe dehumidifier question

I’ve been using a simple Stack On portable dehumidifier in my gun safe for several years. When charging it yesterday I noticed this yellow residue along the unit. Any idea what it might be or if it means it is time for replacement? Thanks in advance.

Tales from the Ontario Big Woods - 2023 edition

No, not legally required. I've got all the gear to do the gutless method and will likely move toward that more in the future.

Tales from the Ontario Big Woods - 2023 edition

Folks have enjoyed my annual big woods deer hunting recaps in the past so this is the 2023 edition. I hunt on large tracts of public land in Eastern/Central Ontario. This is classic big woods country - thick lowland conifers, plentiful swamps/creeks, mixed hardwood ridges, rough terrain - and...

    Non-Resident Hunting: A Canadian Perspective

I’m pretty much solely a big game hunter so not 100% sure - but I believe Canadian residents can simply buy a small game license for most of the species listed. Not sure about if one was not a Canadian citizen though. Each province/territory does have their own rules.

    Non-Resident Hunting: A Canadian Perspective

Believe it or not, it is an improvement overall to the system we had before. Basically people were stacking the previous system with huge groups (we're talking 15 plus hunters on each tag) as the system was heavily slanted toward rewarding that. Also, most people don't realize how vast Ontario...

    Non-Resident Hunting: A Canadian Perspective

I'm not sure what the exact residency period is in British Columbia - but I suspect it is at least a full year. British Columbia has the best mountain hunting in the world arguably. But there is a firestorm of politics around First Nations, extraction industries, etc. that have reduced access...

    Non-Resident Hunting: A Canadian Perspective

Beyond the cost of guided hunts, I simply prefer going myself unguided whenever possible. I’m travelling thousands of kilometers to either the American West or Canadian West so the travel costs are pretty much a wash. Annual draw costs in the US do add up, but overall are still quite a...

    Non-Resident Hunting: A Canadian Perspective

With the ongoing discussion around non-resident hunting and the multitude of recent and proposed changes in the American West, I wanted to provide a perspective that may not frequently be seen or heard - the Canadian one. The hunting opportunities in Canada are the stuff of legend - the biggest...

    Big Woods Bruisers 2022 version

As I've posted before, my primary hunting each year is the pursuit of mature whitetail bucks in the big woods of Ontario. Folks have enjoyed me relaying my tales from the north before so I thought I would share my efforts from Fall 2022. This is classic big woods country - rugged terrain...

    The "classics"

With winter setting in (close to -30 Celsius here last night), time for hunting campfire discussions ... I'm curious what would make a "Top Five Classic Cartridges" list - emphasis on longevity/history/North American big game. 1) 257 Roberts - plenty of history here 2) 270 Winchester -...

    Big Woods Bruisers 2021 Version

Last year I shared some of my tales and trail cam photos from the big woods of Eastern Ontario and folks enjoyed it. Given that here's the 2021 version of my whitetail season. Spoiler alert - I ate tag soup again, partially because I was trying to be selective in a low percentage environment...

Backcountry deer lever - BLR vs Marlin

Thanks for the feedback/opinions thus far folks. As suspected, it looks like either will be quite capable of performing under those conditions. We'll have to see if the more traditional Marlin or modernized BLR wins in the end.

Backcountry deer lever - BLR vs Marlin

Good evening all. I'd like to hear some opinions/experience/feedback around preferred backcountry lever deer rifle between the Browning BLR and Marlin 336. I would primarily be hunting the big woods of Ontario, Adirondacks, etc. Some of those hunts would feature overnight backcountry stays...

    30-30 hunts - Forests & Foothills

In the big woods of Ontario you typically can’t see further than 75 meters so the advantages of massive scopes and long range tuned rifles are moot. Levers carry well, are compact while negotiating brush, and offer fast follow up shots. Traditional Marlin/Winchester levers in 30-30, 35...
