Start by finding habitat, then look for sign, I’m expecting a new Slydog Howler in the near future and if I know me I will have to go out and mess around a little.
Should I give you a ring?
I was out calling one day when a squadron of Apache Helicopters started playing war games around the nearby mountain. It was kind of cool to watch them play cat and mouse for a while.
Then there is the old mine shack we stumbled across one day. I have a pic of it up on my site It is on the...
Krusty, Rich Higgins calls the same coyotes several times throughout the year, yet they continue to respond to his calls. He truly has forgotten more than I will ever know about coyotes. I can’t play a tune on a howler, or squealer like Rich, but I believe I could call a coyote down in that...
Slydog, I agree I have learned a great deal lurking around these boards. I’m impressed with the knowledge that resides on the internet, and the many willing to share and explain their methods and experiences.
Pup, I have “missed” more opportunities than I care to admit. I guess I’m sllooooow. LOL
SE, Consider that there could be more to this than we see on the surface. The potential for a coyote to experience negative reinforcement when responding to distress sounds is great. Especially, if it is a young-less-dominant coyote we are talking about.
Maybe that coyote responded to several...
I primarily call coyotes for recreation. At one time I had an attitude a shot never taken is a shot never made. And the only good coyote is a dead coyote. One day I took a walk around the Dark Board and their outlook seemed to make sense. My skill level is not what it needs to be to do any...
I don’t know what I was thinking; if it is hot to you it is most likely hot to the coyote. Big DUH! on my part. I really don’t change the length of time on stand or calling strategy. I just move from where I think they are hunting to where I think they are shading up. Right or wrong that...
I usually call in the morning in early fall and I’m back at the house shortly after noon. As it gets warmer I have found it helpful to move to shaded areas. But I don’t know how hot Maine gets.
1-pointer,
There are a lot deeper wells of knowledge and experience around than I. But I’m close enough that it is doable. Sounds like fun.
Slydog, I owe you an e-mail but it may be a day or two away. You can count me in on the GSPHA.
1-pointer, I have yet to shoot a coyote at over 100 yards in Utah that I considered to be a called coyote. Sometimes I carry a Mini-14 Ranch rifle that I feel 150 yards is pushing the limits of my equipment. Not because it is a .223 but because I don’t have the confidence in the rifle. My...
Thank you all for the welcome, and the gracious compliments on the website. Look for a New Addition soon.
I will try to talk out of my mouth around here. LOL
Brad H. I love Lance's calls to. I cant wait till winter either so I can get them to where coyotes can hear them.
So this is where my friends have been hiding. Hey, S.E. Haven’t heard from you for a while.
Time on line will be limited for a while. I hope I’m taking on a new project.
