History of Eastern and Western Style Antler Point Count

I prefer inches. For example, this cow measured 23 inches ear tip to ear tip. I don’t use the inside spread of the ears, I want the entire measurement.

    Realistic shooting distances

I’ve never met Buzz, but that’s about the most sound advice you'll get. This year I shot an elk right at 350, no wind, lying prone over my pack. I’ve also passed on much, much closer shots because I couldn’t get a steady rest. Keep practicing under those field conditions and it’ll improve...

    Ammo availability

Interestingly I was in a North 40 store and a Scheels last weekend in Montana. .243 ammo was almost non-existent. It’s been such a mainstay for so many years I was surprised to see so little of it On the shelves.

One gun/caliber to rule them all?

I’d have to agree with others and stick with a .30 cal here. A good .30-06 is hard to beat. If you reload then you’ve got the variety of bullets to go from mild to wild. Something in the .300 mag would be my next choice.

My dad was born just up the road there in a little farmhouse. My grandfather lost a farm there when the state decided to move the road and wouldn’t pay him anything for his house so he had to just walk away from it. Both of my grandparents on my dad side are buried just up the hill in the...

    Griz attack outside of Cody.

Yikes!! We found this track outside of Cody in a creek bottom last Monday, not far from where I filled an elk tag. Happy not to have any encounters!! Hope the boys recover soon.

    The "classics"

.30-30 7x57 .30-06 .35 Whelen .348 Winchester I know the .348 is the odd man out, but Grandad talked about its merits when he had one up in Alaska for many years. I was able to pick one up several years ago for a reasonable price and I’m amazed at its accuracy. Only used it on one whitetail...

Men I Knew, Who Hunted Thier Entire Lives, With Just One Rifle.

Dad only ever hunted deer in two states, Wisconsin and Montana. He used the only rifle he’s ever owned, a Winchester 94 .30-30. Most of the old timers I knew back home only hunted with one rifle. My buddy has his Dad’s Glenfield and another buddy has his Grandad’s sporterized Springfield ‘06...
