    Modern Wildlife Management Decisions

No offense taken, and I agree that social science is a confusing terminology. Even as a practitioner of the science of psychology it took me a while to come to understand that social science (collective psychology) is absolutely a legitimate science that rigorous scientific method can...

    Modern Wildlife Management Decisions

I hope for the future that social sciences are actually what keeps hunting alive and causes the return of productive game management. I see alot inside the hunting community and outside that indicates it could head in that direction. There's alot that could be discussed on that concept, but to...

    Decisiveness as a hunting skill

I can't decide if I'm good at decisiveness or not. I wonder what that means, ha! Reading this thread and the good advice on experience building decisiveness, I think that's why I love hunting camp so much, sitting around telling the stories of the day, not second guessing each other (at...

Kodiak tent, is it worth it?

I absolutely love my Kodiak 10x10. I'm a wuss I guess, but I hate not being able to stand up in the tent. I've been known to set in there in a camp chair, drinking a glass of wine, listening to a Louis L'Amour western, pretending I'm Earnest Hemmingway in safari camp. And the Buddy Heater...

    What caliber for son?

7mm-08 getting lots of love on this thread and it should. I got mine decades ago when there were no sporter weight barreled versions on the market, now they are everywhere! Perfect for a kid, mine has been used by my kids, guided clients, and an many TYHP youth hunts. One thing I like mine...

    Fall New Mexico Bear

Way to go!!!! That's a beautiful bear. I've always thought about trying that early NM OTC bear but never have. Did the houndsman running dogs cause any difficulties? Not going after them, I used to hunt with some of them, I just wondered if they were hard for a non houndsman to get away from.

Which OTC species has eluded you the longest?

Thing is, I see doe jackelope's all the time, but those bucks, they are elusive, might be even more rare that saquatch.

Living somewhere other than the U.S., where would you move too ?

The Yucatan area in Mexico. Amazing quail hunting on the old haciendas, amazing teal hunting in the marshes with flocks of flamingos everywhere, and amazing fly fishing for baby tarpon etc....!

    What pistol caliber?

I carry a Smith and Wesson 44 magnum with 4" barrel. Comfortable to carry and could stop something if need, probably won't ever but makes me feel real western.

    Update--Should I Trade In My Semi-Auto For a Side-by-Side

CZ makes great sxs shotguns around your budget, especially used. I'm use a CZ Bobwhite, the older model with the case hardened frame, and I love it!

Winchester model 70 - sporter vs featherweight?

I've always loved the lines and look of the featherweight. But the one I had in 30/06 kicked like a mule! I thought I'd stay young and tough, but I finally got rid of it, got a 7mm08 way back when, before it was cool. A 243 shouldn't be bad as a kicker, the 308, I don't know.

    Backcountry reading material

Elmer Kelton and Louis L'Amour for me. I'll be taking Mark Kenyon's book this year too, "This Wild Country" I think is the name. And I will download a bunch of Mountain and Prairie podcasts as well.

Future of elk hunting in the west on public land

My entire adult life I've worked with kids, and I've never met a kid who didn't want to hunt, all had the desire to experience hunting in some way. But, to your and others points, being a hard core hunter is so far from their life experience, because so much else has changed in this world, that...

    History Found In the Field

I found what I have been told is a wolf or lion trap in an area that hasn't been trapped for 75 years or more. It was still set and when I slammed it on the ground it slammed shut! Based on where I found it, it probably washed in during a desert flood.

Worst thing to happen to your rifle while hunting

My Granddad claimed he had a worst thing happen to a rifle while hunting. He leaned it up against a tree and went off a ways to take a crap and then couldn't find his rifle. We hunted that ranch for 20 more years and always thought we might come across it. He was probably lying, although he...

Texas moves to a cubed loyalty point system

Awesome that you are a member, they do some great work, a model in many ways for other organizations! With you on the antelope too. And your examples have given me some policy initiatives to bring up before the Texas BHA policy committee and their advocacy with the state. Makes me think Texas...

Texas moves to a cubed loyalty point system

Man you wanna go bighorn hunting! I don't blame you, epic country out there. I quail hunted at Black Gap last Feb and kept hoping I'd see some bighorns, never did, but with so much country to see I didn't glass that much. Saw a sure enough monster mule deer though! And you make some good...

Texas moves to a cubed loyalty point system

Yeah, its a conundrum. I guess I figure the folks in charge of all of this, in each state, have the same ideas and hopes we all have and are just trying to adopt the version that best suits their goals. I like that each state does it a little different, helps me choose which states I go for...
