I was lucky enough to draw a West Yellowstone Buffalo Tag this year which starts on November 15th. The biggest hurdle I am running into is always being able to have a few guys tag along with me for packing out, I live in Billings and have a flexible work schedule where I can watch the weather...
I got out yesterday afternoon after work and the wind made it a little tough but we ended up getting on the birds. Ended up with a sharptail and dove limit and 11 partridge.
That is new for this year, I drew a region 7 tag and got the option for the additional doe tag. The last few years that has not happened. I just think its kind of odd to only allow the successful tag holders to buy another tag and not offer them to the people who were unsuccessful in the main draw.
In my normal grouse areas I am seeing a ton of grasshoppers for the second year in a row which should lead to a heck of a year for sharptail. September 1st cant come soon enough!
Awesome mount and the picture of it on the table really puts in perspective how huge it is. I drew a West Yellowstone tag this year so seeing these pics is getting me extremely excited and making me realize I might need another freezer.
I have shot the 154 grain interbonds in my 7mm mag for years with good results. I have shot several deer, antelope, and elk with no bullet failures.
I have used the SST as well for antelope, im just not a fan of how rapidly it expands at close range.
You might want to consider the hornady GMX. I have shot my last 2 elk with a 20" barrel 7mm-08. I tried the 139 GMX, 140 Etip, and a 120 TTSX. The GMX grouped the best for me and on a chrono had muzzle velocities around 100 fps higher than the factory rating where the Etip was around 100 fps...
For knee pads I use Arc'teryx knee pads and have had great luck with them, generally I am not too concerned about my elbows so I wear knee pads and mechanics gloves.
I have one spot that has cottontails and squirrels which are two of my favorite wild game animals to eat so I make it a point to hit it at least once a year.
In Montana fox squirrels are non native and open year round! With bear season coming to a close I will likely switch to squirrel for a few months.
We do not have alot of them but you get into pockets along the Yellowstone river and can have lots of fun.
I have the sky 5900 and love it. I also picked up an approach 1800 bag with the intent of using that for day trips, the 5900 compresses so tight I have yet to even use the approach bag.
I run mine without the lid the majority of the time, with a really light load I did find the lid would flop...
I build one three years ago and it has worked out really well. I bought a used 6'X10' garden shed off craigslist for $400 and insulated the walls with 4 inches of blue board foam and 2 inches in the floor.
If you are decent with electrical you can purchase a $60 coil sensing thermostat to do...
I saw about a dozen last weekend in the beartooths but most were on private, there was still snow in my normal spot. I did See this sow and really wish it had been a lone boar, it’s the lightest color black bear I have ever seen.
