Funny thing is I’ve only been back into archery for about 10 months. I used to shoot and bowfish when I was a kid and teen but then didn’t touch a bow until this year, 15 years later. This is the first year I ever bow hunted. I started shooting a 40 pound recurve last March and learned how to...
I’m planning on running 4 fletch Q2i fusion 2” vanes. Short and low profile. I’ve been shooting the Black Eagle Zombie Slayers with Blazers and they are definitely loud.
I’m working on a new arrow setup for next year. Using Black Eagle Rampage shafts I messed around with point weight on 340, 300, and 250 spines. I’m aiming for about 500-550 grains total, high FOC.
Bow is a Bear Legion (single cam) set at 68# and 28.5” draw.
The 340s were too weak for my...
For me I just want a setup I can run for everything without needing to change up my sights. Same weight for deer, elk, turkey, etc. And just change heads.
Glad you’ve had good results with your setup. I’m over in western Oregon where it’s thick, and will be hunting Roosevelt elk next year. Close shots and big bodied animals. If I do more hunting on the east side of the state where it’s more open I may switch to a lighter arrow for a little more...
I’ve been watching a lot of Ranch Fairy’s videos and also communicating directly with him. He’s shown that heavy, high FOC arrows work extremely well and penetrate well even in tough quartering to shots, through bone and tough hide, and out of low (40 pound) draw weights.
While he does tout the...
I was shooting the 250 grain heads with my recurve, 650 grain total arrow weight. With my compound using the 300 spine the 250 grain broadheads fly very well.
As I said, after this season I want to build up some arrows with heavy inserts tuned to run 125 grain heads so I have more options to...
Bare shafts out to 30 yards, broadheads grouping with field points well. Watching arrow flight in slo-mo filming with my GoPro and using lighted nocks.
The VPA heads are double bevel and they make some nice three blade heads as well. I haven’t decided if I want to go single bevel next year or go to a three blade. I am a big fan of the machined single piece heads for how tough they are and being able to sharpen them easily. I’ve put this set of...
After researching and watching a lot of recorded shots I made the decision to go heavier than what is “normal” for a lot of bow hunters who are focused on speed. I want it to hit hard and penetrate and don’t care about my holdover/pin gaps much as I wouldn’t be shooting anything past 40 yards...
So far the fire block foam is holding up well. I’m going to try to not shoot broadheads through it much, and maybe unscrew them before removing the arrow. Pulling the broadheads back out through the foam is what really tears it up.
The target was pretty shot out when I got it. I rebuilt it once and then proceeded to shoot it almost daily for 6 months with my recurve. It was getting shot out again and now I have a compound I’m shooting almost daily, so time for the second rebuild.
All cured up and took some shots at it in various places. I’ll rate the arrow stoppage as “acceptable”. Arrow removal is pretty easy.
550 grain, 20% FOC, out of a 28” draw 60# Bear single cam rated at 320 IBO.
I got an old Rhinehart deer target for free this past spring that was a model without a replaceable core. It was already shot out so I rebuild it the first time using two layers of pretty dense foam sheet for center filler and Great Stuff gaps and cracks for the rest. It held up well with almost...
I recently got a compound to hunt with in addition to my recurve. On my recurve I’ve been using a cheap Kwikee 4 arrow quiver but I wanted something nicer for my Bear Legion. I really liked the design and light weight of the Tight Spot quivers but I wanted something with dual arrow holders.
I...
