Not to learn about hunting, just to still be a part of the hunt. Even if a guy can’t safely climb the mountains every morning he might still want to take part in elk camp just to be a part of the fun. I will still want to do that as long as I can
If I were you and if you were still able, I would go as a non hunter by joining up with a group just to experience elk camp and to be in the mountains. It’s not as good as actually hunting but would still be a good experience to be a part of a hunt. Outfitters might be onboard with something...
I have met a few other hunters while hunting Co. I have mostly hunted 512 north of Paonia but the last few trips there have been way more hunters than elk
I have signed on with an outfitter around Montrose Co to do a drop camp elk archery hunt for this year. That is it outside of my normal Iowa whitetail hunting I do every year in my home state
I have recently signed on with an outfitter in Co to go on a drop camp hunt this fall. This should be interesting as I have only gone on DIY elk hunts before. At least this way if successful the meat is packed out on horseback instead of on my back the whole way.
It was about 6-8 years ago, I was on a diy archery elk hunt with two buddies in the Gunnison NF of Colorado. We had pulled two wheel carts 3 1/2 miles up an old logging road and a reservoir excess road to where we ditched our carts. We brought 2 weeks worth of food, fuel, clothing, etc. One week...
This is exactly the kind of stories I would love to read. Something we can all learn from. It may save a life some day. Can’t wait to read it. Thank you
I found a post on here with a lot of good stories titled ( Ever run into bad guys) or something like that. If you haven’t read it yet, it’s got some good stories that would fall into this category very well
I remember many years ago waiting for the next issue of Outdoor Life Magazine I think. My favorite section was called ( This Happened to Me). There were some incredible true stories of adventures in the outdoors that went terribly wrong but the writer lived to tell about it. Some had a funny...
And I have only been on a horse no more then 1/2 doz times. And I agree that they try to hurt a guy when they feel like it. I’ve seen it. I know nothing about riding or caring for a Lama
They are amazing critters and becoming more popular all the time for back country hunter. I just prefer to not be responsible for someone else’s animals while I am out hunting. To each their own I guess
I think I would prefer to be dropped off by horses like in a typical drop camp then left alone without any horses in camp to contend with over renting lamas and being responsible for them all week. I don’t have much experience with horses either but I have rode them a few times
I’ve been working on one of my buddies who has been riding the fence on elk hunting this year since he has been unsuccessful on 2 diy hunts and even 1 guided hunts. He wants to go with a guide if he goes, I prefer to go the cheaper route. Too bad we can’t find an option that serves both hunt...
