    Another Idaho Goat tag holder

He was shittin bricks because he was unarmed, probably would have been happy to sacrifice one so he could get some sleep. I asked him not to bring them as I was concerned we were too close to Bighorn country and didn't want to chance bringing in disease. I ended up carry some of his camp in on...

    Broken Goat Horn Repair

Who's had this done before? Any advice? Good/bad experiences?

    Rifle caliber for elk?!

I like to use 1500ft/lbs of energy as a start in deciding adequacy as an elk round. Of course good bullets, a gun you can shoot well, etc. I firmly believe you must be very comfortable with your gun, as the adrenaline rush in the field won't be a help and muscle memory should kick in when...

    Another Idaho Goat tag holder

Congrats Ron. Going solo is bad ass, especially up where these things tend to die. With the help of my friend Matt, I filled my tag last Sat with a 10.5 year old Billy and watched him cartwheel 250yds and break off 1/2 of one horn and the tip off the other. Made me sick, but the real trophy...

First goat scouting trip - Lots of pictures

I've scouted my unit 4 times this year and 2 were very hot day and they were definitely in the timber. I know we have a little weather coming to Central Idaho this weekend, maybe it will get over to you as well.

    Idaho Bighorn Sheep Hunt

But you couldn't shoot him one week earlier.... I'll get the rest of the story at lunch Thursday, but WHAT'S THE SCORE........

    Another Idaho Goat tag holder

Hey Ron any more scouting trips? I have seen a total of almost 30 goats in my small 1 tag unit, not all close enough to judge well, but I feel more comfortable judging sex now. Seems if you can watch them long enough they all will scratch their ear eventually with their hind foot and give the...

    Idaho goat tag!!!!!

Congrat's. If you get a chance please post pics from multiple angles. I too have a goat tag in idaho and am trying to better judge horns.

    Another Idaho Goat tag holder

I, like Ron, am a lucky Idaho Goat tag holder. Actually lucky enough to have the only tag in my unit. I looked over a goat that looks like this guy's brother, but didn't get close enough for a pic worth posting here. Got the same ear scratch confirm that Ron did on sex, no missing those...

    New .280

140gr for deer/antelope and maybe up to 160 for elk, we have only used Accubonds. I would start with any of the 4350's or 4831's, then maybe RL19. Slower powders may work, but I wouldn't start there. Great cartridge, wish they were available in more off the self manufacturer's, especially Tikka.

    butchering elk

Depends on if I'm using one horse or two. 1 horse can handle a 5pt or smaller bull, if I bone it out. We're usually not too far from the trailhead, but downhill enough that I don't want to ignore getting the ponies involved.

    How to stay steady

I usually have both a bipod, and carry Stoney Point tall tripod. I detach the third leg from the tripod and use as walking sticks with gun in pack holster. For shooting, my preference, terrain dependant, is: 1) prone with bipod and backpack. Dead steady, allows me to stretch my comfort...

    Big Fin?

FYI - From Idaho Regs, pg 73. It is Unlawful To: Use aircraft to locate game or furbearing animals and communicate location to persons on the ground, or to use any helicopter to transport hunters, gear, or game except at established landing fields. I have no idea, legally, what an established...

    CA D-3 Archery Deer

A majority of the deer in that unit live year round below the national forest boundary, in the oak's, in areas like Alta Sierra, which looks just like where the pic of that buck above is from. Very few deer up high, very few even migrate. No reason to with the year round feed down low, so the...

    CA D-3 Archery Deer

I lived in that unit for 7 years and my folks have lived in D5 since 1980. My advice is to find some blm pockets down closer to Grass Valley/Nevada City with lots of acorns or maybe some fruit orchards near by. Those deer will not be active much in this heat and once their horns harden won't...

    First blood of the season

Don't use that one as a benchmark for your Cali hunt or else it will be real dissapointing. Nice kicker, definetely take that to the taxi!

    Calibers for WY mule deer

Like others have said, shoot which ever shoots the best, that you like the most! Mule deer aren't elk and dont' take near the bullet or knock-down, but either of these calibers would be fine on elk also. Back-up guns are good if you are driving to another state, but wrong ammo is very very bad.

    Western Culture?

Welcome to the West. I'm not from New Mexico, but did move hear from a coast, left in my case, to Idaho. The learning curve get's steeper the more you find game. Sounds obvious, but until you get to know the animals and where they like to be, it can seem arduous. Theory turns into real life...

.300 Wby Mag Loads for Elk

Not sure if we did at the time. Tried Retumbo and H1000 fromt the slower end of the spectrum, but may have only had IMR4831 at the time. I will check that out, but for what ever reason, his 26" Mark V liked that R19 for some reason and got the speed. I just wish it didn't kick so damn much on...
