Anyone made the switch from a compound to crossbow?

An unhealed elbow injury ruined my bow hunting until crossbows became legal. This young meat doe never knew what hit her. My crossbow is an older Ten Point purchased second hand for a very fair price. - TR

    Favorite Elk Calibers

.308 has always worked well for me. I shoot twice into the chest and they fall soon after. - TR

Men I Knew, Who Hunted Thier Entire Lives, With Just One Rifle.

50 years ago, I was a teen living in rural Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Many hunts took place with a man from our church named Harry Freed. He was a steel worker in Beaver Falls and worked hard to provide for his family. Harry hunted deer and bears with his 300 Savage levergun which had a...

    Just purchased a 1894 win 25-35.

My Uncle Harold and Aunt Lilian lived in rural Mifflin County, Pennsylvania all of their lives where they enjoyed hunting deer and bears very much. Aunt Lillian hunted with a cut down Remington slide action in 25 caliber and many deer and a couple bears were downed with it. The 25 Remington...

    M1 Garands

I am a member of our local VFW Honor Guard and we perform flag presentations and 21 gun salutes for deceased veterans. We rec'd M1 Garands from the State Nat'l Guard and one of the members stained and re-finished to look like new. - TR

    Red Stag

I'd love a hunt in Romania for fallow deer and red stag but cost factors are too high for a retiree like myself. But fallow deer are widespread at ranches across USA. They're even hunted in Florida!

    Red Stag

I hunted in southern Ohio at high fence ranch. Most folks assume that Ohio is flat, but the southern areas near Kentucky and West Virginia are quite steep. - TR

    Red Stag

I took this stag after a long stalk in rough steep country. It took two shots at approx 85 yards to down this magnificent animal. 30-30 is a keeper! - TR

This Black Hills muley was downed with one shot at approx 225 yards or so. Savage .308 is a keeper! TR

They just don't build beautiful hunting guns like they used to.

This handsome .308 is super accurate with 150 grain ammo by FEDERAL. - TR

A bolt action carbine, simple scope, varied handloads, good for everything.

I've had very good luck across the decades with my 660 carbine in .308 topped with 2-7X scope. This big forky was taken within the Black Hills Nat'l Forest of western South Dakota.

Would anyone else care to give praise to the .308 ?

I sent my 99 Savage to MagnaPort in Michigan and their process did not even mar the blueing at all. The result is complete elimination of muzzle jump with reduced recoil. - TR

    Solid Entry Level Crossbow

This older Ten Point has been downing deer for me since 2008. It's a keeper! This hunt took place in northern Maryland where deer are abundant and hunters are few. - TR

Do you own a scout rifle? Is it worth getting one?

This is my well used .308 Remington carbine. - TR

Would anyone else care to give praise to the .308 ?

I'm a huge fan of the .308 cartridge as offered in lever action rifles. Very handy to carry all day yet has the power, reach, and accuracy to down big game animals within reasonable distances. - TR

    Pork in the freezer

Another Florida wild hog for the freezer! This one weighed in at about 90 lbs. Typically, I hunt these tasty animals with my 30-30 but my elk rifle hadn't been out for awhile. .308 is actually way too much power for these hogs but it got the job done! -TR

    Deer rifles for young hunters

If typical shots within your region tend to be 150 yards and less, look no farther than a good 30-30 carbine set up with a 2-7X scope. My friend's son swears by his Glenfield 30-30! TR

    Any heavy equipment mechanics here?

My son-in-law (Dan) majored in diesel mechanics and hydraulics in high school. He first worked as a mobile mechanic for John Deere in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for several years. Then he moved on to repair construction equipment such as front end loaders, bull dozers, and cranes. Now he...
