I really like mule deer hunting (any way I can find them) and quail hunting behind dogs. Trying to keep your dogs going where they are supposed to and getting them to actually hunt sure has a way to get your mind off everything else in the world.
I use milk jugs full of water for longer range practice also. They do leave no doubt when you hit them.
KC - I don't shoot that much. But I do try to shoot some all year long. I probably go through a box of rifle shells every couple of months on average. Its not a lot, but it helps me avoid...
It isn't necessarily the commercialization that bothers me so much. I would love to make a living hunting and don't blame anyone that does. But this is just a blatant end-around. When we already have nonresidents and residents arguing with each other or fighting with wildlife agencies in the...
I really use one rifle and use it all year long. I shoot at things when out riding in our pastures such as coyotes, skunks, whatever. It is great practice. In my opinion, being accurate while hunting is as much a matter of confidence as skill. You get confidence through practice.
I kind of hate to hear complaining by residents about nonresident tag quotas when they have a loophole that they can sell landowner tags to nonresidents. I didn't realize there was a difference between private-land only tags and these landowner tags until this year. I've thought about it for a...
The difference between "access" to federal land and access to tags kind of sticks in the craw of many nonresidents. Yes we can go walk on to public land just like anyone can. I understand the fact that states own the wildlife and can charge what they want for tags and can dole them out however...
Back to the original question - I'm paying $425 for a very good three day antelope hunt on a ranch in NE WY. I have a friend who got me on it. Two years ago he killed a buck that appeared to score just high enought to make B&C but his taxidermist cracked the horn covering. Last year he got...
The widespread use of shooting sticks has probably helped people's shooting ability more than anything. I know some people have made their own for a long time, but it really seems that in the last ten years that actual portable, easy to use ones have been commercially made. Simple, but they...
I don't think the politicians or the courts really wanted to get involved in this. Frankly, I think they were practically forced to. If her husband really hasn't allowed her any kind of therapy or free access to her by doctors, maybe someone did need to step in legally. I think there is...
Calif. Hunter -
If you find a load for your 270 WSM, I would really appreciate info on it. I just bought a Browning Mountain Ti in 270 WSM. I recently found someone who is willing to teach me the art of handloading so I'm going to give it a try while the chance exists.
I had been waiting about 6 years to get on this particular ranch for antelope. I have a friend who has literally hunted antelope there every year for over a decade and they kill very nice antelope - right around the B&C minimum, every year. They manage their harvest very carefully. It is a...
I know private is a lot better, but we don't want to spend the money for trespass for deer. We are paying for access to a pretty top notch antelope hunt and my buddies want to go ahead and chase deer after we get done there.
We are trying to decide between deer tags for B or C. We are hunting antelope on private land in a unit that coincides with C for deer, but we can't hunt deer there. I have the BLM maps for the region which looks to show that there is plenty of public land. There looks to be some large chunks...
The gun just came in last week and my gunsmith has it to tune the trigger and mount my scope. Final weight should be a lot less than 81/2 pounds. The gun itself doesn't weight by 51/2. Final weight will probably be right around 7 or a little less. I suspect the recoil will be plenty...
I just bought a Browning Mountain Ti in 270 WSM. That cartridge is plenty of gun for elk. I'm not saying larger diameter isn't better (if you can handle the recoil). Personally, I'd rather have a flatter shooting, lower recoil rifle than the 30 cal mags because I am more confident in putting...
Try Kifaru
Check out Kifaru packs at www.kifaru.net. I love mine and they are great for hauling meat and camp. They are just fine for daypacking also because of the great fit.
Camp + an elk quarter on a Siwash
An entire antelope loaded
Has anyone hunted public land in Region B that could offer some guidance? Heading up there in two weeks.
There are few walk-in areas in the area for deer also. I know quality probably varies dramatically in these areas, but are they typically decent areas to try. Any info from past...
