Elk reacting to being shot with rifle???

Yes !!! I'm sure we have all read about the hunter that shoots the elk (or maybe deer), then walks up to it and puts his rifle on the elk/deer to take the usual "grip and grin" photo. At that time the animal jumps up and runs off with the rifle/sling in it's antlers never to be seen again. If...

Just avoid the yellow snow, unless you need the electrolytes.

    Hydration drinks?

I use Wilderness Athlete Hydrate and Recover, along with some LMNT powder. Fill my Camelbak with it in the morning and chase elk all day through the mountains. edited to add: Wilderness Athlete Discount code is "20YEARS" for 30% discount.

    Where to stay?

Pagosa seems like a great place. Some nice Hotels along the main drag that are on golf courses. We always go there when we are staying in Chama for our annual elk hunt (it's only 45 minutes away). Walmart there for whatever, and lots of good eating places. Cole's Meat Processing does an amazing...

    Socks!

I use the Kenetrek Ultimate Liner sock under the Kenetrek Alaska wool sock. They are up to the knee, and have padding in the right places to make all-day boot wearing comfortable.

    Shell holders for single shots?

Some type of loops on a wrist band that has Velcro so you can adjust the size to wear over any outer clothing?

sighting in at a low elevation for a higher elevation hunt

In all cases (where possible) we all know it is best to fire a shot or two when we get up to our hunt area to make sure nothing came loose. I live (and sight in) at sea level, and my hunt is in Northern NM, elevation between 8000' and 9500'. When I shoot upon arrival at the ranch, I don't find...

Yea, he will probably be working behind the gun counter at your local Cabela's next week offering his infinite wisdom on firearms.

    Stuck Brass

As buckbull suggested in reply #6, check for carbon ring just in front of the chamber where the rifling starts. I understand it is more common in the smaller bores (6.5) than the larger calibers. I've personally never had any problems loading nickle plated brass (.270 Win and 30/06), maybe I've...

    Savage Impulse / Straight pulls

Seems like they are trying to rekindle the interest in the Blaser R8 rifle. Same (or similar) design. I don't recall much interest, and the price was really high.

    WWYD - 300 WBY

Agree. Most have the thin barrels that heat up quickly, so you have to wait between shots for it to cool a little. I wait 1 minute between shots and 5 minutes between groups (or longer). Of course when hunting, you can't wait if a follow up shot is needed, but when trying to do a load workup...

    WWYD - 300 WBY

Since you are shooting a Mk V, which has the famous Weatherby freebore, suggesting loading the bullets to get closer to the lands won't work.

    WWYD - 300 WBY

He said the cartridge was a 300 Wby, but did not say it was a Weatherby rifle. Knowing the brand might help us with offering more suggestions.
