I smell a loophole... I can still bring a spotter, some binos, and a tripod! There's an awful lot of scouting backpack trips I would like to take in the CO/WY/MT region (I'd still buy a fishing license though).
I don't have a ton of photos from packouts. I tend to hunt alone more than I'd like...
TX whitetail last year.
I promise, there's half a raghorn on my back in this second photo (or was, till I had to sit and rest because my feet were going numb)!
And my favorite, first elk killed with my...
3" high at a hundred and just point shoot to 300 for me. is that the mpbr, or whatever? I don't really know. I just know I'm 12-16" low at 400 (Can you tell I don't shoot my rifle enough? Archery guy here), and aim a couple feet over the back if (heaven forbid) I have to follow up at 500 yards.
MacQuarrie is an all time favorite of mine as well. Some of the best outdoorsman writing I've come across. Like you, I return to his stories again and again.
Season's getting mighty close! I still can't quite believe I've got a tag this fall. I'll be cheering hard for all you guys going in on the opener this year.
Oh man... this is brilliant strategy. My wife likes me with a well groomed beard. But the threat of a mustache gives her nausea. This is a total game changer.
I move too much in saddles, and they hurt my back. Might be able to fix that with the *right* saddle... but I am switching to a lock on stand this season.
You're going to hear a lot of guys pitching copper on this forum. I vacillate back and forth between caring about lead in food and thinking it's no big deal. The Hornady SST is one of the deadliest bullets I've used in my 06 for deer sized game. especially at longer ranges. Barnes TTSX puts them...
Start low poundage (like 35 lbs).
Get coaching (Solid Archery Mechanics Online course is good, and can get you accurate enough to hunt in a MUCH shorter time frame, like a month).
Don't try to fine tune arrows till you are consistently shooting softball sized groups at 15-18 yards (note, they...
Man, just when I think us trad guys have it rough, the compound crowd starts talking about their tuning issues. In trad, the first rule is YOU are the problem. The second rule is YOU are STILL the problem. The third rule is to shoot bareshafts till your head spins, while feverishly raising and...
They may be crowded, but elk will still be there. You might try staying hyper mobile, and pick walk in areas every morning and evening based on wind direction + lack of vehicles. It's how I avoid people here in TX on super crowded public land. I keep as many options open as possible, and try to...
