Drew Arizona Nonresident Desert Bighorn Sheep Tag - Kofa NWR. Dec. 2022.

One of the things my guide did was have his son stash jugs of water around the desert mountains for us so we could go deep. The area there was bone dry, as is your zone and carrying enough water was just so heavy. I am not sure where you are from but even in December days on the lower deserts...

Drew Arizona Nonresident Desert Bighorn Sheep Tag - Kofa NWR. Dec. 2022.

I drew a desert bighorn tag years ago in the Mojave Desert . I was a guide myself then and figured I would do my own hunt. Fortunately I decided to talk with then hire Master Desert Sheep Guide Terry Anderson of the website below. He operates out of California, Arizona and Nevada. I doubt...

Are you a reloader? I began a post about the "Swede" not that long ago. I have that same rifle in stainless. Sometimes I miss the look of blue and walnut. In your modern Winchester you can really take that caliber to the "Prom" in terms of performance. I strongly suggest Lapua brass.

What firearms would to take travelling around the USA, going into both anti and pro states ?

Caiifornia and Arizona are sister states but a world apart when it somes to fiearm laws. One state will give you a handshake and a pass for certain guns and in the other state it's felony and loss of gun rights. What firearm would take with you in your camper on a long road trip around the USA...

Can the 280AI Really Be this good! What is your experience with it?

I bought my 280AI about two years ago, pretty much just as the Covid problem began. Getting the best recommended powders was not possible, so I made do with what I had. Performance was OK, not great, not bad, right in between the 7mm Rem mag and a 280 Remington. Then I got the best recommended...

Young Guide, Old Guide, Talking Elk Hunting

A close friend is an elk hunting guide. He is 40, only operates on private land. I am 74, decades ago I was a guide. We don’t hunt elk together. He is guiding then, but later during a long bird season, we hunt wild country for grouse. Often there is snow. We see the tracks of game birds, lions...

Poll: Rifle Caliber for Western Hunting

i was at the range today, doing load development for my Kimber Hunter in 280AI. Brand new cost two years ago was about $780. The max velocity for my 140 grain TTSX in the Barnes manual was about 3170'/sec. I was able to get 3182'/sec with the 60.5 grains of powder. I looked up the fasted load...

Poll: Rifle Caliber for Western Hunting

I also have a Kimber, in a Hunter in 280AI. It has just replaced so many other rifles/calibers. At a mere 5 3/4 pounds with a 24 inch match grade barrel, it heats up and strings very quickly. It is a "three shot" rifle, at most, The first two shots will touch, making a "figure 8". The third...

Poll: Rifle Caliber for Western Hunting

Barnes makes 4 different bullets in the 165 to 168 grain bullet weight. They are specifically designed for various .30 caliber cartridges from the lower velocity rounds like .308/30-06 up to the big .30 cal magnums. You need to use the one that matches your caliber. I did not know that until i...

Poll: Rifle Caliber for Western Hunting

Neither one for sure. He is what served me well for decades. 35 Whelen for the dark thick timber. 270 for open country. In the past few years, the 280AI has ruled. I sold my 35 Whelen, my 338 and my 300 mags, a 30-06, ( but kept one) Also sold my 260. The 280AI just does it all, but i kept my...

What 38 Special Ammo would you suggest?

I am planning a road trip soon, yes "Gulp" at the gas prices and I will be taking my old S and W Model 15 Combat Masterpiece with me as my only firearm. I have some factory ammo, probably 15-20 years old, Remington 125 +P, Hornady 125 38 Special ( claims 900'/sec and Federal Premium with hydro...

Young Gun Salesman had no idea about a Double Action Revolver

Three years ago I bought a Kimber Hunter in 28AI, It has a 3 round removable magazine. I was talking with my nephew, who is 34. He had just bought some 223 AR style rifle with a bunch of 30 round mags for $499. The first question he asked me when I began telling him I bought a new rifle...

Young Gun Salesman had no idea about a Double Action Revolver

I walked into a gun store today to check on powder availability. Not much! I looked at the rifle rack most all high capacity autoloaders. A few bolt action hunting rifles, near all with plastic stocks. I looked at the handguns, nearly all semi autos. Lots of them. In one corner of the display...

Anybody else have praise for the evet so sweet 6.5 x 55 Swede?

I went to the range yesterday to try out some 120 grain Speer bullets with Winchester 760 I was hoping the point of impact would be close and there would be no need to adjust the scope for this bullet. I already had it sighted in for deer hunting, with my 130 Barnes about 1.5 high at 100...
