Men I Knew, Who Hunted Thier Entire Lives, With Just One Rifle.

Contrary opinion: Being a hunter with only one gun is like being a mechanic and the only tool that you own is a adjustable wrench.

    Kimber rifles and full bedding

Ive got a Hunter in 3006 that loves 180 grain fodder of most every stripe. First 2 rounds are a figure 8, #3 opens the group to around an inch due to vertical stringing, and I have no idea where the 4th round goes as its off the 4" Shoot-n-See target. I was also wondering if it woulds do any...

    New howa superlite

Ive got a ultralight Kimber in 3006 that loves 180 grain fodder. Thing puts the first 2 rounds into a figure 8, the 3rd an inch high, and the 4th... who knows as its off the paper by then vertically. Recoil is stout but the stock geometry keeps it tolerable. I wouldnt want to try the same rifle...

Light weight .308 lever action suggestions

wasnt aware that lightweight + lever action went together very well. Going to follow the thread to learn more.

    Arkansas/Oklahoma Fall Bear

Acorns started falling here in NW Arkansas on 1 Sept. Sheesh a guy just can't win. Same thing happened last year. 6 bait sites running. 4 of them had adult bears coming in during daylight until the Wednesday before opener. Across fell. Bears were never seen again during the season. Crossing my...

Recommendations for short-barreled rifle (16-18") with threaded muzzle?

I purchased a Mossberg Patriot super bantam in 6.5cm for the 5' nothing wife. Tossed a red dot on too since she is cross eye dominant. That handy little booger is now the first rifle I grab when I hop on the quad or SxS to check trail cameras, fix fence, or fill feeders.

    Ruger or Savage

If you get a Savage get the Axis 2 and NOT the Axis 1 (unless you plan to replace the trigger immediately). Axis 2 has the wonderful accu-trigger aka adjustable for pull weight trigger. Axis 1 does not have an adjustment trigger although they make several aftermarket triggers that drop in. This...

    Laryngeal paralysis

Lost lab lab last may to LP at 10.5 years old. Had symptoms (mild) for 2.5 years, then surgery. We got another 2 relatively healthy years with him after surgery. Wasn't in any pain or major distress until his last week with us. He did retire from being my Dept of Defense service dog to being a...

Just Bought A 41 Magnum Revolver, Anybody else shoot one?

I would absolutely LOVE to have a 5" barreled revolver and a lever gun combo in 41 Mag. The search continues but poverty prevents the dream for now. That Freedom Arms in the pic above is beautiful!

Handgun virgin seeks advice & recommendations

You can be brought up to a usable level of proficiency on a PROPERLY FITTING shotgun or AR in an afternoon. Getting to the same level with a handgun takes much, much longer. I'd recommend finding a 20 gauge shotgun in a youth or bantam size and topping it with a red dot. Find some quality copper...

    Shopping for a Rifle

Don't forget that most common calibers have low recoil ammo available for them. Inside of 300 yards I'd be comfortable using the low recoil ammo on everything but bull elk. Of the listed choices I'd go 7mm-08 or one of the 6.5's.

    Heritage Arms 22 LR / 22 Mag

Had a couple of them over the years. Liked most of them. Good for plinking and trap line use. Useless for anything more precise or important than that.

Ultra light elk rifle suppressed? Christensen Arms Ridgeline FFT 300 PRC thoughts?

The guys over at Fierce Firearms just did an entire podcast episode on short barrels and cans on hunting rifles. I'd give it a listen.

Archery Elk Hunting - Media Tactics vs Reality

Giving serious thought to taking in a couple trail cameras and my saddle setup. Set cameras on water and let them marinate for a day or three while I go walkabout in the unit looking for fresh sign. Always have a back up plan or three!

Archery Elk Hunting - Media Tactics vs Reality

Doing my second 2 week pack in trip for Colorado elk starting the week before you. Into an OTC unit known for SILENT elk. * Local lore has it that the first Hoochie Mamma call + the first Phelps Bugle tube call of the year starts the annual elk migration to private land)* It's mostly too thick...

When have you shot game animals on the move? What rifles have you used? How close and how fast?

Was just discussing this with my 96 year old neighbor here in NW Arkansas. He said they took a ton of running shots (chased deer don't stand still very damned often) but that they rarely used rifles for it. Shotguns with buckshot we're the tool of the day. The terrain and vegetation thickness...

What firearms would to take travelling around the USA, going into both anti and pro states ?

As full time RV'rs of many years experience we simply do not spend our tourist dollars in places that are anti-2A. California and Illinois being Exhibits 1 and 2. Although these days both coasts require research to stay legal. Someone above posted the link to state by state info. I'd you are...
