Sunday morning I had a chance at a buck feeding towards private but couldn't get a shot before he crossed the fence. Driving home that night I saw my first mountain lion crossing the road then crouching a hillside. Good luck to see the best local hunter, I think. Monday I set up at first light...
I'm 0/3 on elk tags. To prepare for my second rifle cow tag, I got in the right frame of mind this morning.
Got home about 2, in time to test my first round of (last year's) venison jerky. It's good.
Got to the trailhead around 4, there's a truck, PA plates. Shit. I like this spot, had a...
I wish! It's a small, non-sauna specific stove, so I have to really work to get it over 165. But for $100 with all the stovepipe, chimney pipe, and connectors, it was really the genesis of the whole project.
Joke's on me, as now I have an extra cord or two of wood to collect each year, plus a second fire to tend. The sauna is glorious, though.
I got the idea from the Finns, who would historically use the sauna for bathing, birthing, cleaning the dead, drying or hanging meat, if I understand...
Last winter I built a meat-hanging shed. Well, it's really a sauna, but why not also a meat-hanging shed? It's detached and insulated, with two operable vents and a gap at the bottom of the door. I made the benches removable and doubled two of the 2x6 ceiling joists.
A few questions for you...
For those who would throw out positive meat - no heart the day of the kill, correct? That seemed like one of the best traditions, in my highly limited experience.
Interesting, hadn't thought of the balloon corollary (my wife is a balloon pilot). No legal issues with flying as low as you want, though we do try to avoid flying low over livestock. Legally, you can land where you damn well please, as any balloon landing can be viewed as an emergency landing...
My great grandmother wrote into a Boston Globe cooking column under Mountain Laurel, her son wrote in as Mountain Laurel 2, so seemed fitting to keep it going.
Six or seven 60s/70s Fenwicks, plus two modern fiberglass rods to cover the 3 and 4 weights.
Old click pawl reels to match, my favorites being Battenkills and an Orgis/STH Presentation.
I like cheap and retro aesthetics. Any gear that works great while being older than me gets my vote. See...
Holy Donut, squid ink pasta at Pacciarino, ferry to Long Island (or any of the Casco Bay islands), Sicilian slab from Slab or Micucci's, innumerable great breweries and coffee roasters for Portland stuff.
Otherwise, any random town on the mid-coast (Stonington?), and try to make it to an island...
