If this is your first time elk hunting i'd HIGHLY recommend signing up for the elk101 course. I learned things that would have taken me ten years to learn by trial and error, and i'd hunted elk before. It's that good.
Where are you at? Able to do any scouting? I'm in Santa Fe so it's just an hour and a half north of me. Not sure if you've got Gohunt, but according to them the success odds are actually not that bad, considering the draw odds. (I'm guessing the dudes who are successful are locals though)...
Hey kmx,
I've got the hunt just before you, 50 first archery. It was a third choice but i'm happy to have it. I was successful in 51 last year but i know 50 is going to be a whole different animal. Probably going to head up and scout later this summer. I'm considering hugging the unit 51...
Can you give a hint as to where you're headed? I've not been to many spots that didn't have ANY water. I'd rather carry a spade and dig a hole before i carried multiple gallons.
You do have a filter, no?
Oh, Lord. That thin, hard plastic neck strap with those heavy steel porro prism nockers. Kinda wish you hadn't brought that up, but yeah, it's a classic.
New idea for an episode. Randy and guests in red plaid and blue jeans. Sleeping in surplus army pup tents, showing up in an old Scout. Cleaning animals with a fixed blade Buck knife. Drinking Hamms and Leinenkuegels, smoking pipes. No onx, no gps, just maps and compass. Basically no...

For six bucks you should own one whether you're biking with it or not (assuming you don't own one).
I'd say carry in the case. I've bike hunted before and...
When the hell is meateater going to come out with some new shows? They made a big deal about moving to netflix a year ago and since then, nothing. No new content in a year; are they simply a brand now?
I've got a buddy who never borrows anything. He'll buy new what i've just offered him for free. It's frustrating because i'm a big believer in borrowing and letting others borrow. It feels like i can never pay him back for his kindness. I buy my gear to be used, and to me it doesn't matter...
I read somewhere that animals will be back into a burn area within weeks. If i can find the source i'll post it.
I hunt the edges of any burn i can find, no matter how old.
I was on another topic, 'face coverings', the other day and i found a guy who, like me, does not look an animal in the eyes while sizing him up. I'm a pretty big believer in humans being able to 'feel' another person looking/staring at them and i think animals can do the same. Does anyone else...
I'm going to start a new thread on this topic, because i believe this is real and i'd like to hear other opinions on it. Please join in if you've got experience.
I'm not familiar with elk nut, but at a quick glance it looks like it's mostly focused on calling. It's only $10 so not much risk if it's not valuable to you.
Elk101 has a chapter on calling but is much, much more. Corey has done a damn fine job of turning his strategies and experience into a...
As others has said, organization. I bought a half dozen clear plastic storage bins. They're stackable, sized to fit the truck bed and clear so i don't have to open them to see what inside.
In addition to hunting i also backpack, car camp and fish. Seems i was always stealing small items from...
Aspen actually burns pretty hot long and clean, but you've got to add it to an already hot fire. As WyoDoug mentioned, i think if you imported mesquite you'd hear about it from someone official.
3rd season CO at 9k will be cold, but nothing that should keep you from sleeping well, especially...
Is there some specific part of the site that gets hit hard by these jokers? In my short time here i've not seen any of it, at least in the 'big game' and 'archery' sections where i hang out. I see more arseholery in two minutes on disqus than i've seen here in months.
Edit- Also, Randy do you...
Again, fair enough. It was never my intention to start a conversation here on a public forum. I was just curious. I'm done commenting on this thread.
Cheers, and good luck to you Quackillr and everyone else in all your hunts this year.
